"You can't really believe that," Ruby spoke in between heavy breaths, glancing over at her jogging companion.
"It's true!" the other woman returned defensively. "That eyesore of an abandoned mansion..." Both looked at the sight upon a distant hill, a view that was afforded to them by their position on a hiking trail outside of town. "It's only still there because we know better than to demolish it. No one has gone near it for a hundred years, for fear of..."
Ruby groaned and slowed her pace to match her companion, who was coming to a stop. "Yeah, yeah, for fear of letting loose a vampire." Ruby sighed. "I'm just saying, Mary, that I'm surprised you'd be so gullible."
Mary gave a shrill cry as she shoved her friend's shoulder. "I am not! You're not from here, you wouldn't know our history."
"It's just a story..."
"No, it's history." Mary looked dead serious. "That vampire fed on our town for generations, stealing away virgins in the night. We're all sworn to--"
"Calm down, supernatural vigilante."
"This is why we aren't supposed to tell outsiders."
Ruby laughed and patted her friend on the back. "Come on, I've lived here ten years. Hardly an outsider."
"A nonbeliever, then."
"Well, yes. I am that." She smiled brightly and glanced back in Mary's direction. "But, unfortunately for you, I'm the one that would be recognized as sane by society as a whole. So I win."
"No, that's just..." Mary gave an exasperated sigh. "The stupidest thing I've ever heard you say."
"You know what I think is stupid? Being afraid to make good use of a relic." She motioned a hand towards the mansion. "No one wants to do anything with that? Seriously? If you're afraid of the structure, tear it down. Demolish it during the day and leave this supposed vampire exposed to the light. That'd kill him, yeah?"
"Yes, but..."
"I'm done talking about this, Mary. I'm sorry. You believe what you want, I will believe what I want, and we don't need to argue about something that doesn't exist. It will only get mean."
Mary nodded and remained silent for several moments. "...You'll never go there, right?"
"Why would I go there? There's a vampire sealed in a coffin, wrapped in silver. What a dreadful place."
"I'm serious. Promise me."
Ruby raised a brow. "...Okay. I promise."
Mary nodded. "Fine. Let's just...not talk about it then."
The two resumed their jog, during which time they discussed all manner of random things. What so-and-so had posted on facebook and blah blah blah. None of it really soaked in to Ruby's mind.
As the sun settled behind the horizon, giving way to the moon, Ruby wondered what it was that wouldn't let her drop the curiosity of the story. Vampires weren't real. But coming here...it wasn't going to prove anything. She would find nothing, as expected, and she didn't dare tell Mary or anyone else that she had come, anyway. So what was the point?
Ruby stepped on to the porch, looking at the overgrowth of the garden on the pillars and awning. Ivy wrapped possessively around what was otherwise impressive show of architecture and wealth, now left to wane in obscurity and disrepair because of some folktale. Her crystal blue eyes turned to the door, which was wrapped in chains and hosted a wooden sign that warned "DO NOT ENTER". The twenty-one year old almost laughed. A quick skirting of the structure proved that not all of the windows had been sealed properly, and on the side of the mansion she found loose boarding and broken glass that easily granted her access.
"Dammit," she cursed as she entered the structure, her right forearm dragging over a sharp remainder of jagged glass. As she took to a proper stance she looked at her wound, watching the crimson blood that welled along the five inch gash. If she weren't so certain that vampires didn't exist, she might have been worried about more than potentially needing stitches. That, and, perhaps she would've came to explore during the daytime rather than right at dusk.
Ruby took a couple of steps forward, finding herself in a parlor. A layer of dust covered everything but it was still easy to see that the place had been decorated in luxurious taste. A quick look around as she strode through; as much fun as it would be to rifle through things that didn't belong to her, she had another goal in mind. She continued to wander, soaking in the details of her surroundings as she searched for a stairwell to the basement.
It took several minutes to accomplish this task. Once the path was found, Ruby felt an odd sense of uncertainty as she began to descend the stairs. A choking of darkness as it encompassed her. She flicked on her flashlight and continued onwards.
Okay, so it was a little creepy. But it wasn't anything she couldn't handle...
Until her flashlight's beam settled on a coffin. In the middle of a large chamber, black and of an onyx luster. Unadorned by wrappings of silver chains, as it had been described. Unless. Unless he was bound in silver? Could be that she had misunderstood...
She shook her head. It didn't matter. It wasn't real. If anything...opening the coffin would reveal to her some poor mortal who was chained and left in a box to suffer and die. Still, her steps towards the symbol of human death were cautious.
She paused as she stood beside it, resting her hand on its lid. Her right hand, as it turns out, as some of her blood dripped on to the surface. She almost felt - or heard - a shifting from within.
Your imagination... she assured herself. She slowly drew her hand back, staring at the smear of blood she had left behind.
Ruby took a breath, ran her unbloodied hand through her golden tresses while continuing to hold the flashlight. Her hair was kept long, reaching nearly to her waist, and was somewhere between what would be called a curl and a wave. As her fingertips reached the end of their distraction, she paused only momentarily before placing her hands on the exterior coffin clasps.
Just...open it. You know you will, eventually, so just get it over with.
The latches released with what seemed to be an extraordinarily loud click. Another breath. And then...she lifted the lid to peer inside.
She didn't have to point the flashlight directly to see that it was a dead body. Though it seemed to have withered, there was no decomposition... She leaned in slightly as she shifted her light source to observe the silver chains that wrapped the dead man from throat to toe. Her gaze settled on his face.
And his eyes opened. Ruby should've screamed - should've ran. But instead, she just stood there. Staring. Her flashlight still pointed at his body and her finding a want to shine it at his face but thinking it'd be rude to do so.
"...Hello," she offered after several moments.
If he was a vampire, no doubt he'd be starving. She could only hope that the silver would restrain him...she was a virgin, after all, and according to the townsfolk that was this one's thing.
