I had a surge protector :(

Use at least 2 surge protectors next time. Insurance should cover it, and to bad about that 21" flat screen monitor that got smoked too! *wink*

Most surge protectors have a warranty of some sort in case of damage.

I'd take a look.

Surge protector- was phoneline going through it?

Insurance- if you rent, most likely the deductable is $500

Damn, Mistress- I am so sorry that happened. Totally sucks! Have a technician check it out for what might be salvagable. You might not be totally fried. :(

It's my grandparents house...they have insurance I do not. We are still waiting for the insurance adjuster to come look at our house after the hail damage last week :(

Bummer

Good bet their insurance will cover it, don't fret yet. There's plenty of time later if you truly need to be pissed off about it.

...and do disconnect from the power and the net/phone lines when there's electrical storms from now on.

Yeah check out the specifics of the warranty on the surge protector. Usually says something like you have to send your whole pc into them and the surge protector at YOUR cost and they determine the "current market value" of it then refund u that.

It's a fucking surge protector...I didnt save the box I bought it in...there was no paper with it and it wouldn't work anyways....

It's fucking gone no way around it.....I'm going to be paying off a god damn computer that doesnt even fucking work!

Look for a brand name on the surge protector somewhere... look on the internet... *Shrugs.*

Not a good day for people here at Lit...

I'm so sorry, Mistress. The advice above is good. Look on the surge protector for a company name and model # and contact them... you might be covered. You also might be covered under your Grandparent's insurance policy. Its hard to say for sure, but I wouldn't just give up on it... I think you might be able to recover at least some of the cost.

I can only echo earlier thoughts and comments. I am sorry, Mistress. I hope everything works out, for you. :rose:

I'm really sorry about the electronics. I 've so enjoyed the way you put them to use.

I'm relieved that the lightening didn't take your whole house, and that you are OK.

I was scared for a moment.

Any chance that you bought the stuff with a credit card? Sometimes the card has insurance.

I have decided it wasnt a power spike caused by lightening because everything else works.....so who knows what happened.

Actually it still could be... what is the "everything else" that's working? Computer equipment is ESPECIALLY sensitive to spikes and surges...

If its not caused by the lightening and the computer is still under warranttee you should be able to get the manufacturer to fix it.

silly question,

I know its a silly question, but often over looked. Does ur surge protector have a reset switch?I do support for computers and thats probably the most overlooked problem. Had a surge and it trips the surge protector.

Why don't you let the insurance adjuster make that determination? Cause & amount of damage is his profession.

Actually, it sounds like lightening damage to me. Did it happen during a storm? Lightening likes to hit stuff in the house at the end of the line. I used to live on a 1/3 mile long lane. It is much more likely to follow phone lines & TV cable than power lines.

I never lost a computer , but there were a couple of tv's & fax machines fried. You can't always be there to disconnect them.
