Because no small part of people's pride comes from knowing where they came from and that by large has been taken from blacks. And it only divides racist whites from everybody else. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the first time the Mexican Army didn't get its ass handed to it in a high hat by a foreign power. That the French went on to eventually vanquish the Mexican Army and rule Mexico is beside the point.

Not many riots during Festival (which is what 5 May is called in San Antonio) in Texas. Mostly it's just another good reason to eat Tex-Mex and get drunk.

Also, it's a pretty big retail holiday, especially for food retailers.

Oddly, it's not a big holiday for white sales...
