Letterman (and his lazy writers) = lowest common denominator. (he wouldn't get the joke there)

I should have explained: Letterman's comedy is about the absurdity of celebrity, particularly his own. His bad jokes are meant to be bad. That's the joke.

But it would be still be funny to see her catch a frisbee in her mouth.

Letterman is lazy and up his own arse and is paid more than some country's gdp.

The joke falls flat on me, despite any attempts at 'so bad that it's funny' kitsch, because I don't see Camilla as a figure of fun. What has she done to deserve the joke? She's not as pretty as Diana was. Big fucking deal - from what I've seen of her, she's twice the woman that that publicity-whore was.

Hey everybody, let's make fun of people for the way they look!

Some might disagree with the whole "What has she done?" routine, given the nature of her past relationship with Charles, and the one she pretended to have with her husband...

However the rest of what you said... Everyone does it; it'll never go away. Not saying you're wrong, just that it doesn't matter much that you're right.

You see? Now you get the joke. Maybe you can explain it to the Earl better than I.

Where have you been, Gauche? If I had been asked to guess what kind of thread would flush you out of lurking, it wouldn't have been this one.

What do you think of "Magnum Opus" as a character name? I think he's the heir to the throne of an extinct principality. He was on the brink of fame as the conductor of a symphony orchestra in Prague, but his career was derailed by his ether addiction and a scandal involving underage girls. Now he teaches music at a university. He's terribly bitter. Where does sex enter the story?

Bullshit.

That's the lamest excuse on the face of the earth for piss poor behaviour and one that never ceases to tick me off.

Yes, it does.

And that is truly Letterman's specialty, schoolyard humor and all.

But Earl, I must tell you that this AV is even more delicious than your last.

Love the cuffs, love the pose, and could you possibly pan the camera down just a bit more?

Yum.

I'm puzzled about why people refer to Camilla as ugly. I've seen photos of her and seen her on videotape and I believe she is quite attractive. Not any great beauty but probably better looking than most women her age.

Comparisons to Diana are really not fair. Camilla is old enough to be Di's mother.

The sex is only hinted at because it is exclusively pre-Lit age. The ether addiction was the clincher, the underage girls don't matter on either count (Count). Magnus Opprobrium is a better name.

Count Opprobrium.

I like it, but it's impossible to type without looking at the keys.

Then put them back in their locks and continue with the typing, or wear a blindfold.

You can be as ticked as you want. Being mad won't change things; unless it makes them worse. If it were a question of more serious behavior, then I'd not have posted it, but it isn't. It's a guy making jokes on a television show, and that's it. We all say things for the sake of humor, and many of these things are at someone else's expense, negatively or positively (like we tend to jab each other here) alike.

But it's a joke, meant to make people laugh. Get over it.

But it's not funny though, that's the thing.

Eddie Izzard's routine on Prince Philip is absolutely hysterical. He's taking the piss, but he's taking the piss out of things that Prince Philip has said ("Don't stay here too long, or you might end up all slitty-eyed") and done and he makes them hilarious.

From what I can see, David Letterman's whole joke is saying "Look everybody! Camilla isn't very pretty!"

Then don't laugh, fault the guy for not being funny...

I'm not judging anyone on the quality of thier jokes; we all drop one now and again that doesn't make people piss themselves, and now and again, at least someone thinks you've lost touch with funny. But c'mon, guys. The point was still to make people laugh, success or failure. Intent is what makes the difference.

I know a lot of people who'd listen to Eddie Izzard and wonder why the hell he's saying the things he does and what is so funny about a squirrel wearing make-up. But the guy's hilarious to other people (me included, though the only thing I've seen of his true comedy is "Dress to Kill"--feel free to toss out some more titles so I can look them up and check them out).

Look at it this way: Michael Jackson's on trial for something he may or may not have done. Has he been made fun of? I don't hear anyone coming to his defense, and he has done a lot of positive things for people. He's done more for charities than most people who ever even consider (though yes, others have done more--and they've still been made fun of). Why is it that the line should be drawn over this woman, who isn't really anyone except Charles new wife and long-time lover?

I'm not complaining to you venting here, just pointing out the truth of it. Comedy, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder, for the most part.

Too true. You want to make fun of Michael Jackson for gettign surgery and being very, very off the map, go ahead. It may not be fair, but he's in the public eye and, if you can make it funny, then it's okay.

Camilla's getting bombed for not being pretty, which a) she can do nothing about and b) isn't actually funny in any way shape or form.

The intent may be to make people laugh. But the result is to make people think that Letterman isn't funny.

Watch 'Have I got News For You'. Ian Hislop and Paul Merton will always have me killing myself laughing. They take anything and make it funny. Letterman is taking a well worn stereotype and playing it. No new spin, no amusement value, absolutely nothing to raise even a snigger.

There's no point in saying "Just don't laugh then," because if one person laughs, then he'll think he's worthwhile. I don't watch Letterman, I don't know Letterman, but if he peddles jokes of that quality, then he's not winning me over.

The Earl

PS. Watch 'Circle' and 'Unrepeatable' of Eddie Izzard. If you're bilingual in French, then get the DVD of Circle and watch the French version - Abso-fucking-lutely hilarious.

Ah, in the public eye? But when you marry a prince... especially having been involved with him in an adulterous affair...

Eh. No sense continuing. I honestly dopn't believe we feel much differently about this, just look at it from different angles.

I don't speak French, but I'll keep my eyes open for those titles, and the "Have I Got News For You" (assuming it's in English--your version or ours lol).

Gotta get ready to go out.

Later,
