"It takes a community . . ."

*bump*

because this a good thread damnit!

very good TheOlderGuy!

kandi, trail, debbie, intrigued, and emi

thank you

community is difficult to achieve, but worth the effort. even in "utopian" communities, the ills of society surface, mimicking the very problems that the utopians were escaping. i guess it's the human nature problem.

but we can accomplish a lot with enough consciousness about how we treat people.

i've been longing to get back to this community for some time. i had spent time here (WAAAAAAAAY too much time) about a year and a half ago, mostly at the srp board, and i've missed it terribly. where else can we combine our love of sex, writing and people in such a convenient form? trouble was that it was so addictive here that the rest of my life began to suffer, so i went cold turkey, and became a lurker.

but i thought i would try to return in a more controlled fashion, and look for connections. so far it looks really lovely.

thanks . . .

I completely understand the addiction aspect and I think more than a few people here would agree. (Admitting it is a little harder though) :). So what do you think it is?
A type of personality that, if it weren't Lit, would be addicted to something else?
The internet in general?
The combination of sex and community, and the freedom to speak about anything openly here?

There is a really good site that deals with this subject
http://www.rider.edu/users/suler/psycyber/psycyber.html

addiction???

that's a tough one to understand.
i think that some people are far more
vulnerable to addictions than others
and i can't tell you why
but i seem to be able to spot them
AND their substance of choice

i can go there (to addiction)
for short periods of time
but then real life calls me back
and i have to deal with all those responsibilities

i think that in many many cases
addictions serve as substitutes
for what we really don't want to deal with,
a vacation from being an adult

wait! is this more information that you wanted?:D

Lit is such a great one tho

i figured a little nice couldn't hurt.
i'm amazed really, sometimes, how
people can go way out of their way
to be nasty.

Nice sentiments..

I'm not amazed...most people who get nasty here do so because they fear no reprisals such as a fist in the snotlocker...:D

Still very hot here. Near the end of February
we usually have Autumn.

jeeeeeeesssssh

it would appear that
the community had a rough night last night

the worst of it seems to have passed

they ususally wear themselves out

Walking away from your computer or your friend, after you have done the good thing, feels good. Most of us know how that feels.

It would be nice if when that happens, one would savor that feeling and take it along with them. There would be a lot less nastiness if one did.

maybe this is too political a question

for such a nice thread

but i wonder how communities
in iraq are doing
not the politians or the military
but the poor people just trying to survive
under the constant repression
and the threat of being at war
with oil hungry westerners

i was afraid of that

i've brought untimely death
to another thread

boy Kandi

i go away for a day
and you kill it ---- not nice

but, seriously, communities struggle everywhere.
it can't be any fun to be poor anywhere
much less in a place like Iraq or Afganistan

but to some degree those people have a much
better sense of community than we ever will
because they know the people they live with
they are dependent on knowing each other
and on knowing how their community works

our lives are so fractured, so out of touch
with the basics

i guess is would still choose this life over theirs
but i would love to find a place
where community matters
and people live peacefully and comfortably

is it just me

cause if it is
i'll shut up and go away

but it seems that most of the threads here
and the ones that endure
are filled with a few people
insulting each other

which is fine
i wouldn't want to deny them that pleasure

but i do wonder
what that says
about our lit community

This thread brought a smile to my face. Thanks for sharing and reminding us all of what is the best part of Lit.

Quite right, most of the pricks here would be nice quiet people in real life.

Never say die... but sometimes we must just close the book. If that's the case I hope to cross paths with all of you again...

wellllllllll

i'll take the rap for this thread going nowhere

when i started it i naively thought i'd be able to tend it
everyday, and keep some fresh ideas going

sadly my life online is subservient to my RL
and the demands of running a business
so i can often go days without checking in here
except for the briefest of moments

i appreciate all the positive comments
i've ignored most of the useless rudeness
and i encourage anyone who wants
to take off on a theme
to feel free to hijack us
especialy in my absence

i wish i had time even now to ruminate about
the current state of the world
there's much i'd like to say about dubya
and all his various plans to redistribute
the wealth
from the poor to the rich

shall we call him "Hood Robin"?
kind of a robin hood in reverse

well, not now
but i will be back
for brief interludes here and there
and i'll try my best to poke
the collective consciousness

thanks for listening

i was always amazed

and certainly disheartened
that after four years of
having our pockets picked
by reagan
we re-elected him
anyway

it took a long time to
get over the economic chaos
of the reagan years

but as the ole gipper himself said so often
"here we go again"

now

who's stirrin' up trouble?

you must realize these guys love reagan

unless you haven't been reading much
