Isolation hood

Dom would like to play more deeply with isolation and has told me to do some research independently of his into what I would feel comfortable with.

He wants to use a hood to put over my head which gives a completely dark environment without the use of a blindfold, if that is possible, like the hoods you see on tv programmes when someone is kidnapped (not a mask but something looser).
My initial thought was just to make one, but then I couldn't think of what material to use that would give a completely dark experience. But when I started thinking about thicker materials, I wondered if breathing would become an issue.

Has anyone got any advice, suggestions or warnings?

If you use block out curtain material and make it yourself, you can angle the bottom front cut to leave your mouth exposed. Like an upside down frown, and it can still cover your ears and eyes, even your nose if you want.

I included pictures of the final product in use at the end. There is zipper for the mouth which you can't see very clearly in the pictures. With my collar on over the bottom it was very secure. At first it scared me because i wouldn't be able to remove it quickly especially since my collar was padlocked, but by the time I was finished making the hood I felt comfortable enough with it.

Thanks for your replies, ladies. I'm a little claustrophobic and the breathing bit is/was concerning me. I know where to buy the blackout material as you suggest knotsweet because I've used it for its original purpose in the bedrooms here. I'm not too bad at sewing, though no expert, but I think homemade is going to be the way to go. Still can't decide on any neck fastening though. I'm not collared like you ecstaticsub but I can't imagine being happy with it tight around my neck with another fastening. I'm wondering about making it with a slanted base that is higher at the nape of my neck but lies further down my chest to leave more air and movement under the hood, so that Dom just places it over my head and leaves it? Do you think that would work?

I made mine by using 4 panels that were somewhat keyhole shaped to begin with. They joined together at the top somewhat like a baseball cap.

It is form fitting but leaves a cushion of air between my face and the material. I sewed the 4 panels together at the top and then put it over my head. With the material laying over my head I pinned the sides of the panels to conform to the shape of my head and face and down to my neck.

I then took it off, placed more pins along the seems or baste stitched areas and tried it on again. I proceeded in this trial and error way of putting it on, pinning it and then forming it a little closer until I reached a point where the hood fit closely but not too close and I could get it on and off.

I used elastic at the neck. It fit closely even without my collar over it holding it in place. I originally was going to use ribbon or string to secure it more firmly but the thought of string around my neck freaked me out a bit. The elastic by itself kept the hood on but I knew it would most likely fail during sex or rough play.

The zipper on the mouth worked well because I could breath through it, yet it had the mental feeling of being closed off. It also gave him the option whether he wanted my mouth available or not without taking off the hood.

The same is try about the holes for my eyes. A blindfold could be placed over them if he desired it.

She's suggested some really good ideas here and the link to the earlier thread was really helpful. At the moment when he does isolation, Dom puts me in a room on my own and leaves me, so I'd not considered keeping the mouth area free for other play or whether the hood needs to be tight enough to remain on if I'm being moved about. I'm going to have to refer further to him and ask! I'll probably be back with more questions once I have. Thanks again, ladies.

Because I am really perverted this way, lemme suggest something like a bag that is longer than you are tall. The end of the bag fits your head, and closes around your neck. The opening can be closed --even just a drawstring casing would work, with light weight rope-- past your feet. it could be fairly loose, or it could be fairly tight.

You get good at zippers, you could add them in important places, like crotch butt and tit-height...

You could add tubes at the shoulders for your arms to go into. they could be closed at the ends, and have ropes or clips sewn into the ends.

Dammit, I got rid of a whole lot of blackout fabric recently, and I KNEW I would want it for something!

Like a complete body bag? That sounds interesting. Probably beyond my DIY capabilities, but I could give it a try. And Dom's decided he does want mouth access in the hood so I'm wondering if a Velcro fastening would be safer than a zip?

I think that a zip would be safer. Get the old fashioned "teeth" kind, not the "coil" kind. You can suck air through the teeth of it.

Which reminds me, please exercise caution. If you are for instance gagged and hidden from view, you and he will have no way to communicate if you get into trouble. If you're going to do that sort of thing, a loose hood like a pillowcase that falls down around your shoulders and is wide open at the bottom would be much safer. And keep something in one hand that will be noisy if you let it drop. Or a buzzer button or something.

Thanks for the warning, Stella. Dom doesn't ever use a gag because I find them too distressing. They make me feel like I can't breathe even though I can, and I start to panic. And yes, it will definitely have to be a loose hood rather than something more like a mask for the same reason. He surprised me last night by using a pillowcase over my head with a blindfold, but told me later that he stayed listening outside the door of the bathroom he left me in so that if I made the slightest noise of distress he'd be there in an instant
