My boss is a structural engineer. He used to work with an architect that we shall call Aldrin Cooper, for the sake of this discussion. Bill worked under the title "Aldrin Cooper Associates: Architects/Illustrators" when he worked with another architect that did hand-drawn renderings of their designs. That was probably around 30 years ago. Aldrin hasn't been in this office himself in close to 10 years, and we haven't done any work with him in 12.
So why is all that setup important? Because the phone company refuses to change the name on the phone line.
Today I get a call from a woman asking for Aldrin. I say he hasn't worked out of this office for a long time. She asks if we do the same work. I describe our operation, and she gets hung up on certain words being used. She doesn't understand what I mean when I say "We design residential projects from small house additions, to full houses. We also do store design store remodels and new commercial buildings."
"When you say full houses, what do you mean? Do you mean like the show full house?"
She starts asking if we do computer animated design, asking if we do video editing, and a few other misconceptions about the terms that are used in my industry as well as others, saying something about doing video work for the Grammys a few years ago... When I try to explain her misconceptions I hear button presses on her phone, assume it is a crank call, and hang up.
She calls back, not getting that we are not the company she is looking for, and that we aren't who she was trying to call in the first place. So I explained in no uncertain terms, "I am sorry, but we do not perform the services you are looking for."
"but you work in the industry?, Could you recommend someone else to call? Someone that could help me?"
"I'm sorry but I don't know who you would need to contact, I just know that we are not the company you are looking for."
She sounded insulted that I don't know any architectural firms that do animations and video productions of their work.
Crazy people do not help my day go any faster...
