For some reason I can't quite remember, my husband and I have begun to refer to our daughter as, "the determinant." I think this cements our status as the nerdiest parents ever.

<squeeeeeeeeee>

I know, I know....don't count the chickens til they're hatched. But, really, it's an honour just to be nominated.

:D

I wonder if it is my cousin's impending wedding this Friday that has had me so depressed the last week or two?

It's near Asbury Park, and I have to drive my brother there and back, so no room for a date in my car unless I clean out the back of it (I'm such a slob).

Clean out the car. Maybe someone will ride home with you, and have it washed and vacuumed, too.

I know Asbury Park. Leave early! The shore traffic sucked this weekend. Took me four and half hours instead of three--both ways. Of course if its raining, and that won't be good for the bride, there will be no traffic.:D

Clean your car, Meat. There's always (or there should always) be room for a date.

A four year old older sister having a major tantrum makes her six month old brother giggle.

That infuriates his sister who increases the volume and duration of the tantrum.

Seen at school - Definition of brotherly love: nine year old brother wearing his four year old sister's Disney Princess pink back pack so that she can hold his hand while they cross the road with Mum.

Over the weekend, I visited a friend who is the one person out of approximately 100,000 who (a) has a print copy of Public Law 111-148 and (b) has read it.

The thing is the size of two bricks and weighs about the same. At the time it was passed, no one had read it and no one had any idea what was in it. To this day, the number of people who have actually read it does not exceed 5,000. They made gigantic swaths of the thing to-be-determined-later by executive fiat of the Secretary of Health and Human Services. That was done solely and exclusively for the political expediency that a claim could be made that a law had been passed.

The whole exercise was and is a cosmic joke and a farce.

I just realized I forgot to eat dinner. Lunch too, for that matter. And, unless you count copious amount of coffee, breakfast.

How can I only be two days into a five day, one-on-one stretch with a suddenly-headstrong and nap-free kidlet?

Wow. No solstice threads. I'm amazed.

My father's summer solstice parties are remembered to this day. It's not entirely surprising that the coffin and the black crepe were memorable.

It's a good thing he taught me how to run up the hills. Thirty years later I still recall and use the technique as I did during today's run: slow your pace, reduce your stride and lean into the hill.

He was a newly minted intern back then. I've known him since we began school at the age of four. Everything he's ever accomplished has been done through sheer force of will. Grit and determination were his substitute for natural smarts. All his peers were manifestly stunned by his admission to Harvard. It took several years for him to gain admission to medical school. Throughout his entire life he's worked like a dog.

It often occurs to me how rare it is that I time myself. It is probable that some of my best times occurred unbeknownst to me. I run for the sheer pleasure of it. When I do time myself, I am well aware that I'm "on the clock" and I make an effort to do my best. Who's to say whether that results in better times or not? As has been the case for many years, I compete only against myself.

I. Hate. Closing.

My body is tired, but my brain hasn't turned off yet. Maybe by 1?? Please??

Day 4

June 22 Wednesday

Steamboat Springs to Glenwood Springs 6,728', 104 miles. Some new terrain for the Tour on our longest day of 2011. Some gentle climbing, a good descent, and some little ups and downs complete the BTCs annual century day. We'll be taking some highways and a byway that includes 17 miles on mag-chlor treated earth (better than gravel and smoother than some of the pavement we'll ride).
