I've kinda got my hopes up that i'll get on to this Night Line thing...and i'll be really dissapointed if i dont get on. Based on the feedback i got from my assessments, i did well. I'm anxious to receive the email telling me i'm on, and to attend this weekend's training sessions...

*crosses fingers in hope*

Oh, and there's something else, but i dont want to share yet- i dont want to jinx it :)

I am very pleased to be able to tell you that you have been accepted as a Nightline Volunteer. The trainers felt that you had an excellent grasp of all the skills needed to be a good volunteer on the lines. I’d like to take this opportunity to give you my congratulations and to welcome you to the organisation.

*squeeee* :D :D :D

Congratulations. Now, what is a Nightline Volunteer?

I suspect it is one of those people that sits by a phone all night and talks people out of doing something foolish. Like I tried to do many years ago.

Well, that was my guess, but I didn't want to assume.

I have such "foolishness" in my past, too. And, boy, was I ever pissed off when I failed. Don't regret it, and would probably do the same if confronted with the same circumstances again. I had no one to fight for me, and I had no fight left in me -- just pain.

As for what i'll be doing, nightline is basically a service run for students, by students. It runs during term time only (semesters). The lines open at 6pm, and close at 8am. The service provides out-of-hours access to someone who will just listen. We are a listening service only- no advice, no suggestions, nada. We are completely confidential, and non judgemental. I wouldnt say we 'talk someone out of it' but yes, we do try and get the person to see the situation from a different point of view.

Here is more info Nightline website

This experience will compliment my Counselling training, the skills are the same, as is most of the practice.

I am excited :D

I'm trying to see both this, and the counselling i am training for as a facilitative role. Someone once said not to think of it as your failings, you are merely the facilitator.

The client makes the decisions, and all you do i guide them to think differently- perhaps even more constructively. It is the client's journey, and you are just along for the ride...

Its something i know i have to work on- not taking it personally.

Calling Nightline will cost the same as calling any London landline. We can also call you back if you are on a landline, although not on a mobile.
so if I'm calling from a landline in the US, will you call me back? :p

some days you just want to grab them by the necks and squeeze the very fucking life out of them for being such intolerant bastards. And today I have the mother-of-all cramps so this is one of those days.
