I like to think it is because it allows us to reach new levels of understanding which may have been closed to us before. Without pain we cannot appreciate beauty, etc... And though we often write as a release from the depths of this solitude, it is of comfort that our emotions - difficult as they may be to navigate - allow us to capture such raw and vivid imagery... Life... Something that we might take for granted on a daily basis. Even in moments of joy.impressive said:Why does pain inspire poetry?

Perhaps we just want to share our misery. Dilute it by spreading it around.I suppose that tracks. However, if someone is spending an equivalent amount of time writing when "happy" as when "sad," then it still begs the question.Equinoxe said:I saw an interview with some singer once, I can't remember whom (no one I particularly like, I should imagine), who talked about why he wrote more sad songs than happy ones; I found it interesting. He said something along the lines of this: when he was happy, he didn't want to write, he just wanted to live in the moment and be happy, but when he was sad, writing songs helped him to sort through that and make sense of it.

THIS is where you should say nothing at all... Just like Imp. Exactly.vella_ms said:for me, its easy for me to describe anger but the happy, love, wonderful always seems to elude that description, as if it were all too good to define. or maybe i feel like i would stain it if i did.
You're so damn good.vella_ms said:Sudden colors of rage

of interwoven expression.
The soured smell of sadness
infusing cilia, cloying
with comfort inexplicable.
Woolen fabric over silken skin
warmth provided by prickling barrier.
Discordant strains of silence
unbroken by the hushed tones of melody.
Senses overwhelmed
Senses placated by the promise of tomorrow
