I received my exam results today. I smile :D

Yay Nirvana. You rock!

Thanks all. (Crosses fingers)

I love that site, min. If you want to look at something really creepy, check out the Solupogids.

I used to keep praying mantises as pets when I was a kid. They are really cool. They's stand on my hand and very carefully take food from the other.

Was thinking of being an entomologist when I was a kid. Wanted to study social insects, ants and termites. That was before I discovered the school system had given up on me.

*humming*

You gotta know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away, know when to run... ;)

The first thing I saw when we got to the house from the airport last week was a praying mantis on the wall next to the front door (one of the itty-bitty-est praying ones I've ever seen, too). I thought it was a great homecoming gift. :D

Our backyard is full of ants and termites. If you can stand the heat, you're more than welcome to come study them. :rose: ;)

Mantises are closely related to grasshoppers. So they're born pretty much fully formed and just get larger over the year. It's early in their cycle so they're all going to be small.

Which backyard? The one in Arizona or the one in the UK? ;) I'd love to. I've never seen termites. I'd love to see a nasute someday. The soldier caste has no jaws, has to be fed by the workers. Instead they have a nozzle in their forehead and can squirt glue or poison from it.

There's a species of termite that defends the nest by blowing themselves up.

And I'd love to see a slave making raid. Some species of ants raid other ants nests, kill anything that gets in their way and steal the larvae and pupae of their victims. When these hatch back at the raider's nest, the slaves do all the work. Some of these raiders are so specialised they can't feed themselves and the slaves have to do it.

Impromptu Poem w/ Link

Day and night, night and day,
Now comes the time when the sun fades away,
Making way for the night with its dark embrace
Shaking me hard, thrilling me, taking me to a place
Where the worries of the day no longer matter,
Where I feel so alive, yet while the sensation enthralls
There is a part of me that ever longs for the lark's call
As proof that I have lived to see another day.

Crickets, too. :D My poor mother was horrified one year (I think I was about 5 or 6?) to find out I had been saving cute lil baby crickets from drowning in the bathtub.

The one in AZ. We're termite central here. Luckily, it's a block house so when the termites decided it would be a good meal they only got the baseboards. They're feeding happily on my favorite tree, though. Lil bastages.

That's why we love her so. :D

No, our Meadhbh (to throw as many unpronounced letters into the name as possible) has it right, 'twas a Bilbo quote, from his eleventy-first birthday party.

Nevertheless, I am fond of it and it seemed appropriate at the time.

One of my favorite lines.

Either that or the box one.
