If your using the Word spell and grammar checking program.... I ain't ever figured out that danged thing..... Ogg posted a one sentence paragraph afout three inches long that graded out as 12.0 and supposedly perfect would you believe.....

That's true. I remember reading the sentence in question - the flaw of the program is mostly that it doesn't account for such extreme situations. It's generally a decent indicator, in my experience. When I use it for fiction writing, it gived me a passive sentence percentage hovering at around three, so 27 definitely seems extensive here. But I don't have any experience with research papers as opposed to fiction.
