The earliest manuscript versions of "Rapunzel" from the Grimm brothers do not have the witch realize that Rapunzel has a lover when she thoughtlessly says, "Gee, you're so much slower climbing up than the prince." The manuscript copy has the witch work it out when Rapunzel says, "Mother, why are my dresses all so tight across the belly now?" The good brothers took some license in editing that one.
