As usual your histrionics are showing. I noted that whether an author is good is subjective. I was then told I had no right to an opinion as I no longer have submissions here. So I gave it to him in a typical GB manner.

For some reason my college insists on handing out PDF files that are copy-protected. I guess it makes sense for certain files, but this also extends to assignments. Nothing more frustrating than having to write an essay and having to type over the exact headings and index you are supposed to use just because you can't copy paste that into Word from the assignment file. Feels like such a waste of time...

Not as far as I could find with a few quick google searches. Either I need to know the password, or need to do some pretty complicated stuff to extract the text which involved turning it into images and then having a text recognition program try to read it again. It's a feature of PDF files, you can lock down what people can do with them. It's not like a file access setting in Windows or whatever, sadly.

One of the best things I ever purchased was the Audubon Society's Field Guide To Trees. It's a great reference source with a large section of photographs broken into sub-sections organized by bark, leaves (with autumn colors), and fruits/nuts— cross-referenced to the descriptive section.


My father taught me to identify the obvious major trees: oaks, maples, poplars, dogwood, locust, magnolia, walnut, holly, beech, loblolly, willow, osage orange, etc. Time spent in New England taught me the easily recognizable birch and evergreens. Other travel acquainted me with palms, mahogany, cypress, mangrove, aspen, mesquite, paw paw, etc.


The book, however, has enabled me to identify some of the less recognizable but omnipresent local trees: ash, cottonwood, sweet gum, elm, cedar and chestnut. With the exception of cedar, many of those trees really don't have readily distinguishing characteristics.


It amazes me to realize just how long I walked around without knowing the names of some. How is it possible that I didn't know those were sycamore trees? They're all over the place and quite distinctive by their bark and their habitat. Once you know the name, they're easily identifiable.


I've been looking at a particular tree outside the window for a long time. It's been flowering for the last month. It's now fruiting. In the dead of winter, large numbers of birds and squirrels flock to it. They're eating those nuts in January. The leaves bear a fairly close resemblance to those of the locust but the blossoms and nuts are clearly not.


I FINALLY got the damn book out and identified it. It's turns out that it's a chinquapin.

Update on Og's medical condition.

Eventually we saw a respiratory specialist this afternoon. His surgery was running one hour late.

His message was almost completely depressing. IF the lung cancer is confirmed by a visual inspection - putting a camera down my nose into the depths of my lungs - the treatment will be unpleasant whether chemo or radiotherapy, with no guarantee of increased life-span or cure and the current symptoms of Lambert-Syme myasthenic syndrome are unlikely to go away and may get worse, whether I am treated for lung cancer or not.

To summarise - he will offer treatment if I want it but with no guarantee that the treatment will do anything but be unpleasant with little or no gain. Go away and write your will...

We have agreed to find out whether it is lung cancer and then decide after that what if anything to do next.

In the meantime I ought to finish and post my part-written stories while I still can.

On the brighter side, I live just south of the areas that will be most effected by hurricane Dorian. I do live in a mandatory evacuation zone if things do turn bad due to my small distance from the ocean, but again, the storm is going to do the most damage about 100 miles north. The outer bands of the storm that hit here will be minimal to light tropical storm at most. So nothing bad and I shouldn't have to flee to the west coast any time soon.

My weight used to meander between 220 and 240 pounds but it peaked at 268.2 pounds this summer. Then I found out that my sister is getting married for the second time at the end of May. I want to wear my suit for this so I checked to see if I squeeze into the pants. I bought them when I only weighed 230 and I need to lose two inches of waistline to fit into them. and in all reality I should lose even more than that and get down to as close to 200 pounds as I can.

So I stopped eating any carbohydrates of any kind. All I have eaten over the last month was eggs for breakfast, one or two chicken breasts for lunch, and a steak for dinner. I have been craving carbs so much I even dreamed about being at the same fictional pizza place three times in one night. But I have remained vigilant. I didn't stray for a month.

And then my birthday was yesterday. Exactly one month in and I was down to 253.3 pounds. I couldn't resist so I had a double cheeseburger with bacon and fries for lunch with coworkers, and then a piece of chocolate cake after dinner. The problem with eating one cheat meal and dessert is that I want another cheat meal and another dessert. And on and on it goes.

The next 25 pounds are going to be hell.

I dropped from 270 down to 225 in about 8 months by switching all of the soda I was drinking for seltzer water... and by having a heart attack. Don't recommend that last part, though. I've been able to stay around 225-230 for the better part of the past 6 months.
