Isolated Blurt Thread Again

An awful lot of my posts seem to be invisible.

If by "invisible" you mean that your posts in this thread don't generate a lot of responses, I'll point out that may be more a function of the forums/threads where you post; as you undoubtedly appreciate, some forums/threads are far more active than others.

It happens to most posters some time. Some of the few new threads I post vanish from Page 1 without a response; some get a few and then die, and one of two might elicit debate.

Responses to threads can be ignored because another poster has said something more interesting...

One of my nieces, a councillor in her local area, was re-elected today with a massive increase in her majority. :)

She has worked hard for her constituents and has been rewarded.

(I don't support her party but she is one of their more sensible representatives.)

FUCK ADOBE!

The software company I mean, not the clay. Adobe clay is a fine material for making bricks if that's what you need. Very eco-friendly. I wouldn't want to fuck it, unless that's what you're into, but I digress.

Adobe's software as a service model is bullshit. All I want to do is crop a fucking photo. What happened to you Adobe? You used to be cool.

Yes, but you can crop photos. I use it all the time.

You're lucky enough to have an older version then. Go try to buy a new copy. They won't sell you one. All you can buy now is a subscription.

Back when they announced this bullshit monthly plan, I bought CS6, the last version that you can actually own, figuring I'd live with it forever. But the license is only good for one computer. Not one at a time. One computer. Once you use the key to install it, you can't use the key again and they won't sell you a new one any more. I either have to pay their monthly subscription, or figure out how to hack their install process.

Fuck Adobe.

I've heard good things about Pixlr, and it's free, but I haven't tried it yet for myself. A friend used it to make her latest book cover for a self-published book.

It may be worth a look, but I don't just use Photoshop. I occasionally use Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat, and Premier too. I'm not a professional, just a hobbiest. I use each maybe once or twice a year. I can't really afford to pay $50 a month for something I might not even use this year.

"Keep your old shit coz it continues to work," said EB smugly, putting another record on the turntable. "There's always gonna be some little Japanese dude making cartridges just like his father did. Or in your case, silver nitrate camera plates. Solve your problem that way."

Loqui looked across the world with a filthy look. "Do you want to drink that bloody ink, ground down from beetle dung and molasses?"

EB grinned. "Just trying to help." ;)

One of our neighbors here runs the IT department at one of the colleges. He seems always on the verge of collapse and shares my deep and abiding loathing of all things Microsoft. Oh, I use Word to write my stories. It is the endless parade of shitty operating systems that make me want to go on a rampage.

My neighbor commented that if Microsoft engineered a building the way they do their operating systems, nobody would go near the place.

Medical Update for Og

Today I went back to the neurology specialist I saw on 1 March. He reviewed the extensive blood test results he had ordered then and concluded that I don't have a neurological problem (nor ENT which I had arranged privately).

He suggested I see an optician urgently about my double vision and has referred me to an optical specialist and a speech therapist before I come back to see him in three months time.

I am seeing an optician tomorrow to see if my glasses prescription has changed; and a six-month review with the diabetic nurse practitioner also tomorrow.

I would still like to know why I am unstable and falling over. The medical experts seem to think I am too fit and healthy. So why?

There's a number of possibilities, Og. Double-vision can throw off your eye-ear sync and leave your sense of balance disoriented. Labyrinthinitis - an infection in the inner ear - can cause serious balance problems without much in the way of other symptoms. Other ear problems can be the cause as well, though they usually come with tinnitus or a feeling of extreme pressure inside the ear.

If you're clear neurologically, and there's no signs of a stroke, even minor, then check out the ear issue.

Thanks, Tio.

The stroke, even a TIA, was ruled out within 48 hours of my first visit to a doctor. Even the emergency ambulance crew thought it was unlikely within five minutes of seeing me. So did I. My father and father-in-law had multiple TIAs in their last months so we know what the symptoms are.

I had a consultation with an ear specialist last week. There is nothing wrong with my ears (except some age-related hearing loss). I thought labyrinthitis when the problem first occurred as I had had that before but previously it had cleared up in a few days. But it isn't, or any problem with my ears.

I, and the medical professionals, are still puzzled.

Good luck with it, Og, and I'll ask around the hospital if anyone's seen anything similar. Maybe we can find some other possible causes.

I have been seen by:

Emergency Room; Stroke Clinic; Falls Clinic; Neurology; Ear,Nose & Throat, and have had extensive blood tests, repeated muscle and reflex tests, and repeated blood pressure tests, and an MRI scan of head. Everything shows as normal, in fact very good for my age.

Specifically ruled out:

Any form of cancer inc prostate; stroke; heart; lungs; myasthenia gravis and any neurological condition; anything to do with ears, nose or throat.

Best medical guess so far is deterioration of ankylosing spondylitis causing pressure on spinal cord in neck - but that shouldn't affect speech or vision.

Tomorrow is optician and six-month review of Type II diabetes. (But all the other consultants didn't see anything amiss with blood sugars)

Cervical spondylosis should have been ruled out in your neurologicals, Og. I expect they didn't find any peripheral neuropathy as well.

Have they considered Ramsay-Hunt? Shingles could affect the inner ear as well as facial muscles. That might also account for speech and vision problems.

Thanks again.

All the specialists consider me 'an interesting case'. I wish I wasn't. The neurologist thinks I have got NO condition in his speciality. When he and the stroke specialist tested muscle tone and reflexes my muscle strength was enough to lift them off their feet, pull them over, resist any pressure etc. Neurologist wants to know what the cause is. [So do I!]

Ear specialist looked - nothing like Ramsey Hunt or any ear condition. Ears, inner and outer are normal. I am vaccinated against shingles.

Okay, Og; I've exhausted my inventory of possible causes, but I will raise the question at the hospital to see if anybody knows of anything similar to your condition.

It's generally good to be "remarkable," but not when being viewed medically. One would much prefer being "unremarkable."

Tio, thanks for your efforts.

I am feeling like the problem I had with my Volvo estate - when the sun came out it wouldn't start.

I called roadside rescue the first time but there was a thunderstorm between calling them and their arrival so it started. I had extensive checks done including on diagnostic computer that found no problem. We went out for the day, parked the Volvo while we had lunch, the sun came out and it wouldn't start. I called roadside rescue again. The mechanic spent 35 minutes unsuccessfully trying to start it, so he summoned a breakdown truck to take the car home on a low-loader. Before that truck arrived it rained - so the car started.

I contacted the local Volvo dealer who said 'book it in'. I replied "I can't because it won't start if the sun is shining. I can only get to you if it is overcast or raining".

The next rainy day I drove to the dealers. I drove it into their car park and detailed the problem and they didn't believe me. No Volvo in the UK, or Europe, or worldwide has ever had that problem but they would look (and they expected to find nothing!)

But while they were accessing faults on their computer - the sun came out. They couldn't start my car to move it to the workshop.

Eventually they decided it was a short circuit in the immobiliser coil. They replaced it but bench tested the old one and it was OK. They refitted the old one, left the car in the sun, and it wouldn't start again, so they put the new coil back on. Now their computer record includes one Volvo estate that doesn't like sunshine.

I hope my medical problem isn't as abstruse.

A Chevy owner in California had a problem with his car some years ago. If he stopped for vanilla ice cream on his way home from work, the car wouldn't start, but when he bought any other ice crem, the car would start.
Turned out vanilla was the most popular flavour, so the storekeeper had a freezer of vanilla in the front of the store. The other flavours were in the back. The guy was in and out so quickly with the vanilla ice cream that there wasn't enough time for the remaining petrol vapour to condense and allow proper fuel injection.

There have been some [quite funny] jokes about the idea of a Windows-controlled car. See HERE

Love it.
