a big, splashy announcement (or simply the rumours of one) will fire up his maga base and create discomfort among other republicans desperately praying he'll just go the fuck away because his brand will hurt them in the mid-terms, particularly given the testimony of prominent republican officials in the hearings.

does he think throwing his hat into the ring early will provide some nebulous legal protection from potential DOJ prosecutions? Or is it a case of his ego running him (as usual) and not liking the support desantis is receiving from those formerly backing him?

The vice chair of J6 committee said as much this morning on ABC. “The single most important thing is protecting the nation from Donald Trump.” She said she’ll do “everything necessary” to ensure Trump is not the 2024 nominee. But of course it’s not political.

If the GOP is smart-insert sigh here-they back Desantis and get off the derailed Trump train. Desantis has a better chance to win because...he's not Trump and would get some votes from unhappy Dems, Trump will not get those votes.

If he won't get out of the way, then the GOP will face the 2016 Clinton/Sanders issue where the Dems screwed him for her and his Bernie bros proceeded to not vote or vote indy.

An announcement by Trump would take media attention from J6 at least for a while. It might motivate a few more people to vote in November but little else. Essentially, Trump's political carcass is now stinking so much that I think a pre - November announcement would only be to avoid, deflect, or put off prosecution.

Without Cassidy Hutchinson's evidence Trump would have preferred to put off any announcement until he could claim 110% of the credit for any November GOP advances.

The GOP and the Dems have a similar problem, their best known candidates are far too old and have far too much baggage. De Santis is no shoo in; I would back Haley to take him down, but it is far too early to predict.
