Is there anything more boring than NASCAR?

100,000 fans pouring in to the Atlanta Raceway or whateverthefuckitis to watch cars go in circles for a couple of hours.

Man, that's what I call living. Am I missing something?

I live near MIS Speedway (a huge NASCAR place)

And there is something more boring than NASCAR ... being stuck in traffic with hoards of NASCAR fans.

Oh this is easy! Several things are more boring than roundy rounders:

"Professional" Wrestling  - that is unless it is MTV's Celebrity Death Match (I love that show - almost as good as South Park).

Getting stuck in Seattle traffic in the rain.

Software testing - especially testing the same software, the same way, for the tenth time that week! Yuck!

Damn, you beat me to it! I hate golf in any shape or form.

Even though I work in the corporate world where my peers are often golf fanatics, I have refused to force myself to take up this game. I am not at all interested in it and I can think of a lot better ways to spend the many hours of time that it takes to play a round. People told me 20 years ago that gold was "required" to get promoted past a certain level in the business world. They were wrong.

Local civic affairs programming
(Ordinance 203.4 regarding fence easements adjoining city-owned recreational spaces not to exceed one acre square. Who is representing the City? Ah, Mr Atty, can we have the paperwork....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz)

Fly Fishing on TV
(Now... wait... yes! Bobby's using live crawdads... OHHHH ... almost hauled in the big one... watch what he does next with the grasshoppers, folks...)

Watching the view on late late night TV as the satellite circles Earth
(~~~~~~the sounds of silence~~~~~)

You're missing an indescribable experience, but I'll try.

The roar of 43 engines, the sensation of speed as they fly by you, the whine in the air as they enter the turns, the feeling of sitting on the edge of your seat, desperately praying that nothing goes worng......

The thrill of seeing 43 drivers within inches of each other at 200 mph and everyone coming out of the turn safely....

7 guys going over pit wall and changing four tires, adding 22.5 gallons of fuel in under 15 seconds ......

In March, you missed one of the most emotional finishes ever. It was eery, healing, and devastating all at the same time.

Oh, and the drivers. You'll never read about them being arrested for trying to kill their girlfriends or doing drugs.

I'm on a tremendous Michael (Waltrip, for those of you who don't know me well) high right now. I just returned from our annual fan club meeting. Besides the usual wonderful time with him, tonight he amazed me yet again.

I had two young boys with me, ages 4 and 8. I've taken them to other things before and Michael remembers the eight year old's name and asks him about school and baseball every time we see him. Tonight, after most of the people had left, one of the girls who was helping with the meeting, came back and took the boys by the hand and led them to the souveneir table and told them they could pick out whatever they wanted. Michael had told her that since both of them didn't win a prize, he wanted them to have something. Needless to say, both boys were thrilled. They chose diecast cars (retail $55-70).

Oh, and he starts 5th in the race on Sunday. (dammit, I promised I wasn't going, what's the penalty for breaking promises to your mother?)

You took the words right out of my mouth STG. I have a friend who works at the local arena. He has told me that they actually discuss their moves before hand ...... "You do a #17 and I'll counter with a # 5" ..........
bitter enemies in the ring are best friends outside the ring ...... it's all a big show

Done it still find it boring. I mean I love to watch car racing but not NASCAR. I will watch and enjoy British touring, Australian touring, FIA GT or Le Mans but not NASCAR.

Just to piss off miles. :D

Miles, let me explain it this way. Nascar is like sex. You can talk about it, read about it, hell, even watch it on TV, but you don't really know what it's all about until you've experienced it in person.

:p

Things have changed. Back in the 70s, even to deep south southerners, Nascar was hard core redneck. I knew it existed, and knew Fireball Roberts, Jr., but it ranked right up there with demolition derby in terms of coolness.

I watch it more than I want to admit. Perhaps if Atlanta had a professional football team I wouldn't.

It's kind of cool when they crash. Provided no one gets hurt or anything, of course. That's the only time I watch car racing - when they show blooper reels on the news, complete with a variety of crashes.

To be honest, I find most spectator sports to be pretty boring. The only exception to this is boxing. For some unknown reason, boxing holds my attention.

Could it be the two men beating the snot out of each other? Going out on a limb with this one Laurel. I've seen a few boxing matches in person, worth the price of admission if its featherweights just throwing punches the whole time.

NASCAR....I hate it with a passion. I am quite impressed though with the marketing. People are making ALOT of money off this. Whoever turned it into such a popular event can run my company anyday.

LOL! I don't know...I can't stand to watch bar-brawl-type fights. When people hit each other in anger, it makes me cringe. Yet Boxing is exciting and interesting to me. I dig feather-weight and bantam-weight fights, but good heavyweight fights - with boxers, not sluggers - are exciting too. I'm psyched about the Lewis/Rahman match tomorrow night on PPV. I'm hoping Lewis will mop the floor with Rahman's cheating, lying ass.

He's no longer available to run your company. Dale Earnhardt is the reason Nascar is so popular and profitable today. His wife, Teresa is now CEO of Dale Earnhardt, Inc and was the driving force behind many of the innovations that helped create the marketing of Dale and Nascar.

He wouldn't have wanted the damn desk job anyway.

Damn, I miss him.

"I'm a race car driver. When you drive a black car and you're aggressive .... maybe some are intimidated and maybe some aren't. ..... I want to race. The faster you go, the racier it gets, I'm comfortable with that."

Damn, woman likes her pugilism. I havnt kept up to date with the fight, but I am aware of the discord between the two fighters. I am not a big fan of either but Lewis is clearly the better fighter, despite my inability to get over his accent.

I usually watch the smaller weight classes because there is more action, good heavyweight fights are hard to come by it seems. Especially for my broke, non pay-per-view paying ass.

morninggilr...

Just so I am clear. My smearing of NASCAR isnt any type of critique of the fans, I just hate it.

I believe NASCAR is run by a family enterprise though. I know Earnhardt was a popular driver but I would give more credit(blame?) to the heads of NASCAR.

The France family controls NASCAR, the sanctioning body and International Speedway Corporation which owns 5 or 6 tracks. Without Dale Earnhardt and Teresa's vision of what could be, the tremendous growth of the sport that happened in the late 80's and 90's wouldn't have been possible.

I usually despise Ken Squier, but he said it best. "Whatever stock car racing is, Dale Earnhardt was."

It was Teresa Earnhardt who got Dale's name, signature and number trademarked long before anyone at NASCAR even thought of the possibility of licensing agreements for souveneirs. Dale Earnhardt Inc was expanding and diversifying when the rest of the teams and NASCAR itself was just beginning to view the sport as a business. Off the track, Dale and Teresa Earnhardt moved NASCAR from the dirt tracks into the boardrooms.

On the track, Dale pushed the envelope, drove where others were afraid to go and when he won, the other drivers followed him there. It worked the same way off the track, too. NASCAR has floundered tremendously this year and that's in part because Dale isn't there to speak for the drivers and fans. When Dale spoke, the France family listened. None of the current drivers have the stature and respect in the garage area to fill that spokesman role and the one driver most often mentioned (unfortunately, to me) has said he doesn't want that role, that he doesn't see himself as a leader or accept the responsibility for anyone other than himself. (Yes, it's the fucking crybaby.)

Hopefully, in a few more years, Dale Jr will assume that role. I think Jeff Burton could be the right one for the job, but without a championship or two to his name, there will always be others he thinks he needs to defer to.

I agree. And Rahman turned into a lying, contract-breaking, back-stabbing turd. Some champion!

Do you ever watch ESPN's Friday Night Fights? they show some decent smaller weight matches. I catch them sometimes if I get the site updated early. They also rerun them through the week. I dig Max Kellerman's commentary.
