I just wrote this long and thoughtful answer to a private message and when I went to try to submit it I was logged out. Then of course when I log in all the verbiage is gone. Why does this site log me out or time me out or whatever the heck it is doing? I have been on Lit for years and it seems like only recently I have this problem. What the hell is up? Is it something I have set on parameters on the site or something....aggravates the shit out of me.

Normally if you get logged out and log back in the message is sent.

Might be worth checking your sent items. I have had this happen a few times

We've all been there. Totally and completely frustrating.

Think of it as the price we pay for living in such technologically advanced times - whatever does get saved and sent is there forever - but is gone as if it never was if it isn't sent.

Think of it as an opportunity to resay what you said with a completely un-remembered mental state to guide you. :)

thank you for the info

Thank you for the information about why and how the system logs one out. No I do not have the 'remember me' ticked because I do not do that on any site, part of my security etc so this is why it did that. See I had noted other times that I'd be perusing, posting here and there etc then I would suddenly be out. That is not as irritating as when you have been composing something meaningful and maybe long. I have long posts too not just pm's that sometimes take me a while to write/respond so it is good to have this understanding now of how I can avoid this happening and plan to prepare thoughts differently so as not to get frustrated. Thank you all for the information.

I just fuck things up.

If it is long or complex I will right click and copy or copy and paste to Word or something...keeps the blood pressure down.

Sometimes, and this is only sometimes, if I hit the back button on my browser, I will get back to the page where I was composing the email or PM or whatnot. Sometimes, my composition pre-submit is still there. You can copy, re-log and paste and submit. It's a bit of work, but it works. Sometimes.

On this site, after (I think) 15 minutes of inactivity, it automatically logs you out unless you have the 'remember me' option ticked. One way to avoid this is to open a page on a separate tab and refresh that every so often.

I am usually able to do this as well. Once I log back in, I click the back button on my browser several times and I am able to get to the pre-submit field with all the information I had entered. It works pretty much every time for me. The only time I seem to have an issue where this doesn't work is when I am on the ipad, but my laptop works like a charm every time.

Another trick I use is to preview the post ever so often so as not to go inactive. I do this whether I want to preview or not. Hope this helps. :)

You could have the site remember you, then simply log out when you're done here. You're right to be concerned about security, although you might want to bend your rule for a site like Lit and be vigilant when/where it really matters (banking, shopping sites, etc.).

Otherwise, I agree that the Back button usually works, or you could compose your longer replies in Word, Notepad, or even an email.

more solutions!

very nice and appreciated a couple of more workable solutions suggested from experience; that's helpful thank you

I probably shall usually work at remembering to compose in Word or another text and copy and paste once ready especially when I know it is as I describe 'composing' a response or message and not just a swift post answer

the thoughts from you guys offers how to work in the system; thanks

I have gotten into the habit of selecting everything and copying it to the clipboard before I hit "submit" (e.g. ctrl-a ctrl-c). If something goes south, then I can go back and paste the text in. For some things I'll switch to a word processor so I can compose a reply at leisure (PM's in particular).

For long PMs I usually write in Word and C & P to PM. Here are a couple of things I have learned from my own Word Guru.

In Word and PM if you inadvertently delete something hit Control Z and it should take you back to before you deleted the text. You may have to do this several times, but it usually works.

In Word if you accidentally delete the file. Click the shut Down X (upper right corner) It will ask you of you want to Save. Click on Do Not Save and it should save everything before you deleted the text.

Hope this is helpful.

You can also use the "UNDO" feature - in WORD and in the Lit message / PM window.

Undo%20Icon.jpg

You can find it along the top of the tool bar or (depending on you version of Word) under the edit menu.

You can undo your delete, your paste, etc. On a MAC (not sure if this feature is on Windows machines) you can keep hitting the UNDO to go back through and reverse each of your edits. The REDO (same icon, in reverse, and beside UNDO) will replace your edit.

BTW, your Word Guru isn't this annoying shit, is it?

been there, done that...
plenty of times
if you're going to be long and thoughtful, compose in Word, copy and paste.

Thank you Emerson40, it is not that annoying shit. It is my wife who has been using Word since 1989 and has been in several Microsoft sponsored groups that played with Word and recommended recommended changes to Microsoft and was a a Beta tester in several ideas put out by MS.

She can be annoying, but not usually when I am asking about Word. (G) I am in so much trouble now.(LOL)

It does seem like the Undo function is pretty much the same as Control Z or at least it looks like they work the same. I'll see if I can find Undo in word tomorrow. Which ever one works it looks like using it could save a heck of a lot of retyping. Thank you.

Thank you for asking! It keeps happening to me; being tech incompetent, I assumed it was I (pshaw). I've started copying my replies and posts to Word when that happens.

There seems also to be a lag between posting and appearing. Fortunately I've only once duplicated, but I have no idea how to delete it.

Well damn, I wrote too soon. Good comments all.

Caveat about the safety of Lit: when I open an e-mail notice, my computer says it doesn't pass its fraud test. WTF???!!!!

try this

As a precaution, before submitting your reply/entries, do the "copy" "paste" thing. Drag over everything you typed, right click your mouse then select copy. This way if you get booted off all you have to do is paste it when you come back.
