Nessa ÓBranáin
Student and accused Mafia Princess

The funeral turn out was huge, just as one would expect for a mafia don.

Nessa knew her father would approve. Even some of the press had been there..of course they had no respect as they tried to question Nessa and her brother Arden about their late father's mafia ties..

Of course, Arden, the only son of John ÓBranáin, had taken care of the reporters, protecting his little sister from them as he pulled her closer to his side and nodded for the bodyguards to take care of the questions.

Nessa had just celebrated her 18th birthday last week. Her father had been so proud of her that the party he had thrown was HUGE! It seemed like everyone who was anyone was there. It was even in the papers, although the headline was awful, "Irish Mafia Princess turns 18."

But Nessa didn't worry about it, she was too happy with her family and her friends...and then, not more than 2 days later, her father was shot down...then 5 days later, they were burying him. Nessa had not cried in front of anyone. She kept her tears in private. Or at the very least, with Arden present.

Her older brother Arden, only 3 years older, had a lot going for him, a college senior, girls fawning over him, always in the positive light in the society papers... much different than what the press liked to feed the public.

Now, they were left to fend for themselves..OK, Nessa made it seem more depressing than it was. There was their 10 bedroom home near the lake of upper state New York which was located on 50 acres of private property, secluded so they could still feel like a family. The family business, furniture, which was not up to Arden to run. Secretly, Nessa knew he didn't want to but it was a popular business, well liked and had a good reputation.

Of course, there was another side that Nessa didn't want to believe...the side she never questioned was about rumors of the mob. Yes, there were rumors, yes her father had been arrested numerous times but no charges ever stuck.

Now, would the reality be a wake up call for Nessa?

Deep down, Arden always knew that this day would come. He knew that there would be a time when his father let down his guard just enough that one of his enemies would get to him. Arden knew that the time would come when he would have to take on the role as the head of the family. He wasn't necessarily thinking about the crime family that he knew his father was the head of. He was thinking of his immediate family...... Nessa and him. Arden did not think that Nessa knew about their father's role in organized crime, but he certainly did.

Arden would not allow anyone near Nessa at the funeral. The bodyguards had been given very strict orders....... Nobody gets close to her. Arden did not want any questions thrown her way that involved the Irish mob. He wanted to protect her, and keep her out of it. Arden, however, was another story. He had the stereotypical Irish temper, and he was determined to extract revenge for his father's death. He had already met with several of his father's underbosses and was making plans for assuming some of the power his father had. Their father had told Arden that he didn't want Arden following him into the business, but Arden wanted to get revenge, so, he was, temporarily anyway, going to go against his fathers wishes.

After the funeral there was a small gathering of close friends of the family back at their huge house. Arden did not let Nessa out of his sight. He was going to do everything possible to protect her, and right now he felt that she was very vulnerable. He walked over to her, kissed her on the cheek and whispered to her, "is everything okay sweetheart?"

All Nessa could do was nod. She took a deep breath and turned toward Arden to wrap her arms around him, leaning her head against his strong chest.

They were incredibly close and always had been since they were young. Their mother had left the family just shortly after Nessa was born and no one had heard from her since. So in time, their father made up for their mother, spoiling Nessa more so than Arden.

"I guess so." She said, her breath shuddering as she inhaled, "I just miss him so much, it's going to be weird not knowing he's here..what about the business Arden? I heard a rumor that someone is trying to buy Daddy's business." She looked up at him with tears ready to fall.

Arden held Nessa close. He had spent a lot of time protecting her, and he would continue to do so. He never let her see what their father was really into. Arden knew that their father had spoiled Nessa. He had plenty of money to do it.

Arden always made sure that Nessa never knew where the money came from. When she would ask what their father did, Arden always answered vaguely......talking about a business that he owned...about how he bought and sold goods.......imports and exports.

"Things will be very strange without him here Nessa, but we will be just fine. There is nothing you need to worry about." He wiped a ear from her eye and kissed her cheek softly.

He looked into her beautiful eyes, " I have heard that there was someone interested in the business. I am not sure just what they want to offer, but some of dad's associates have asked me to sit in and hear what they have to say. I don't know a. OT abut what he did, but I want to be part of it so that I can protect our interests. I have to make sure that you and I are taken care of."

Arden hugged Nessa close to him again. "The meetings will take place here, so that I do not have to be away from you. I think that it is extremely important that we stay close together for the near future. If you have to go somewhere, you must take a couple of the bodyguards with you. They will keep the press away from you and allow you to do what you want to do."
