The recent loud beating of the war drums against Iraq sure has served its purpose. Not long ago, revelations about corporate wrongdoing, including Bush's at Harken and Cheney's at Haliburton, and the collapsing stock market and economy filled the headlines. Many Americans were beginning to realize that the entire business careers of both Bush and Cheney were based upon fraud and cronyism. You don't hear about any of that now, because the saber-rattling against Iraq has pushed it out of the headlines. Saddam Hussein has replaced Osama bin Laden ("been forgotten") as the new Enemy du Jour. (Oceania has always been at war with Eastasia; it never was at war with Eurasia.) Meanwhile, the stock market fell over 200 points yesterday and continues to drop today; the economy is still in the doldrums; millions of Americans are out of work through no fault of their own and financially suffering-- but all that is drowned out by the beat of war drums. And conveniently, this began just two months before the upcoming congessional elections. Purely a coincidence, I'm sure . . .
War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength, y'all.
