Interracial

I'm writing a story where I want to hint (just hint) that it is interracial. This is not for the IR section but the LW one. The idea of the hint is to push the buttons of people who are annoyed with black-on-white couplings, but not actually come out and say it. Why not say it? Because I think it is hard to do that and not sound racist.

I mean, if you say "she was white, he was black" you could respond "what the hell does the colour of their skin matter?"

So my plan is to convey the impression through their names. She has a name that suggests she is white, and he has a name more common amongst blacks. I don't even know if this can be credibly done. If it can, any suggestions for (given) names that don't sound too obvious? Or a source of such names?
I think that it runs into a cultural issue. A black male from an affluent family might well be named "Patrick". A black female from a religious family might be named "Ruth". Also, such an individual in question, at least if he or she was a black American, would be *almost positively* of mixed heritage unless his family was recently from Africa. I feel that the best way to make a statement is to have characters behave like real people, with their backgrounds, do.

Some families are well-adjusted and some are not. There are non-prejudiced whites and bigoted blacks, and vice versa. By and large, there are varying degrees of prejudicial views held by older generations that are not so strongly held by their children or grandchildren. (Interesting examples: the white mother of our current President, Barack Obama; and the RNC VP candidate, Paul Ryan whose ex-college girlfriend is black and who has a black sister in law. http://www.tmz.com/2012/08/31/paul-ryan-black-girlfriend-daneeta-pope/) Being of mixed heritage myself, I prefer a story with ambiguous, racially unbiased protagonists, though the characters around them might very well be prejudice to varying degrees.

Numerous studies have estimated the rate of European admixture in African Americans; these studies have documented average admixture rates in the range of 10% to 20%, with some regional variation, but also with substantial variation among individuals. For example, the largest study of African Americans to date, based on autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) markers, found an average of 14% European ancestry with a standard deviation of approximately 10%, and a range of near 0 to 65%, whereas another study based on ancestry informative markers (AIMs) found an average of 17.7% European ancestry with a standard deviation of 15.0%. By using nine AIMs, Parra and colleagues found substantial variation of European ancestry proportions in African-American populations across the United States, ranging from just over 10% in a Philadelphia group to more than 20% in a New Orleans population. Similar levels (11% to 15%) of European ancestry also were reported by Tishkoff and co-workers, based on more than 1,000 nuclear microsatellite and insertion/deletion markers.
[...]
These results were confirmed in the estimation of IA by using the program frappe. The amount of European ancestry shows considerable variation, with an average (± SD) of 21.9% ± 12.2%, and a range of 0 to 72%. The largest African ancestral contribution comes from the Yoruba, with an average of 47.1% ± 8.7% (range, 18% to 64%), followed by the Bantu at 14.8% ± 5.0% (range, 3% to 28%) and Mandenka at 13.8% ± 4.5% (range, 3% to 29%). - Zakharia et al. "Characterizing the admixed African ancestry of African Americans". Genome Biology 2009.

The host of "Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr." wrote the following: "There is no African American we have ever tested who is 100 percent black. None," Gates said. "It deconstructs the notion of race ... We are a mixed people."

I don't believe there is such a thing as a "white name" for a woman, unless you give her one that sounds as if she is a new immigrant, such as Olga or Helga or something like that. Even that isn't really certain. There are a few distinctive "black" names for men, such as Black Muslim names. The names "Tyrone" and "Royal" also comes to mind, or you could give him a diminutive name, such as Willie or Bobby.

Does this mean you're not going to describe the characters? If you do, and don't mention race, people willl assume they are both white, since that is something of a default race.

This is so insanely and depressingly true.

Have you guys ever had a bad response to a Interracial story?

-->Does putting a black person in a story draw a negative response?

The real question is....have you ever NOT had a negative response to an interracial story. The answer, of course, would be ......heeeeeelll no!

What is this "describing" of which you speak?

I try to keep descriptions to a minimum so as to not exclude anyone. As soon as you say white, tall, blonde, trim, etc. you are excluding. Excluding, that is, readers from thinking "ah, that could be me."

This is how I "describe" penis size:

She felt him against her opening, then sliding in.

"Oh, wow!"

So whatever "wow" floats your boat, he had it.

Okay. That's it!

(Warning - what follows is not meant to be 'Gospel Truth,' is it!)

One of the sexiest looking females I've ever seen was this young African woman who ended up marrying one of the local young lion entrepreneurs - she used to wear tight jeans and those Sixties/Seventies scarves around her forehead and she drove a blue-metal coloured E-Type Jag. Okay so maybe it WAS the car that got me then... Anyway - she was really hot. Cher always pushed the ethnic look early on when she DID have a REALLY young and lithe body, and that leather string around her head was pretty exotic I would have to say. Never forget the story about Salvador Dali 'arranging' to have her sit on a dildo he had left in a chair when she first met him...

Even Elton John's best 'friend' in the music business - Ian 'Molly' Meldrum never could get over how hot the young singer Marcia Hines was (so there ya might even have had a crossover from the gay world getting it on with a black, red-blooded woman!)

Not to mention that I'm thinking about having Jimi Hendrix return tomorrow evening in a space-craft outside Katy Perry's dinner reservation at a Paris restaurant and take her to the park and fuck her till she's really wide awake.

...Or, Russell Brand admit that really he IS a Sikh (because afterall, he is) and Katy (who's part Portuguese) just couldn't handle that the kids would be born dark without the whitening pills and likely with turbans on as well. Proactiv 'alba candida' should sort that out though.

Or even - shock, horror - the world's absolute most sexually lusted after (by women of all orientations) other woman - Nigella Lawson, actually tells us at last that she is third generation Anglo-Indian.

Or the Pope finally release those birth papers that the Copts had all this time about how that Greek-Arab Whore Cleopatra's kid she had with that white supremacist Roman, Julius Ceasar - had another kid who was 'King of The Eastern World and of The Western World thus All The World' er - Jesus Christ, whose appearance was 'rather dark' according to the gospels. (Not saying any of this is true mind you other than that we all know that JC did not ever look like some Scandi actor with blue eyes!)

But best - or worst - of all, let's have a Ranga hit the sack with some African-America for some REAL IR action around here!!!!! I can personally think of a local politician with orange hair by name of Pauline * that maybe Jimi could move on to after KP.

Any writer here that can't raise the juices of the average person with something that steps on the public sensibilities of the by now almost-dead Southern golf club denizens - is not trying hard enough. Charlize Theron taking her pants off in Bagger Vance was fairly mind-boggling, but it could have been even better if she walked off into the horizon or the fog or whatever it was with Will Smith in the end of that flick.

Frankly, I want to hear from those who STILL have problems with this 'vision' because I do like a challenge so that I can smell the smell of napalm in the morning. BTW, my father-in-law's third wife is Vietnamese. And he's Sicilian, and he lives in Vietnam most of the time now and speaks Vietnamese very very well. I think he's still racist though, he just doesn't equate what he does, with what he thinks he believes he does. Or that his wife actually quite counts as 'foreign' when it's got to do with his own situation.

'J.' (Shaking my head and laughing at my own view of 'other' people.)

True that.

Agreed LOL!

Personally, I get mostly complimentary feedback on I/R stories. Some people criticize the way I write, but I seldom actually get flamed for the content. Of course, many of my earlier I/R stories were E/C involving an interracial couple, usually written in first person. Lately I have been writing I/R stories in which race really is signifigant. They are usualy white woman and black man or men.

Of course, the nastiest comments are LW with a black man and a maried white woman.

Oh come on. It's such a country of prudes now. RSS and all.

Something that is a bit of a puzzle to me, actually. Does leave some story possibilities for ancient history sex, though. :D

Was watching Bend It Like Beckham this morning and wanted Jes to get it on with Keira Knightley and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers both.....such a real nasty fantasy there.

Parminder Nagra is so damned hot.

I guess I'm lucky...the feedback to my interracial stories has been all positive or oddly neutral (granted, the subject matter is different...I write white male/black female, and in only one of my stories was anybody married [the guy was, his wife was frigid, and the female was a stripper.]) Do I just get a pass because of my subject matter, or it is because I tend to focus more on the physical attraction portion of interracial (a in, black women have curves, big asses, and attitude, and are fucking sexy?)

In other words, am I doing anything wrong here?

Keep in mind that if you write a story with cheating (vs revenge on a cheater), there's always a possibility of getting readers that were looking for a different story and react quite negatively to yours. So, a story with interracial elements might very well get dissed for that reason alone. That's why I recommend reducing the number of "fetish" elements to as few as possible.

For every two RSS/VHP members, there is a you and a me as well. :p Balances it out.
