Internal server message...

Okay, I'm really frustrated by this: Why is it that when I click on certain threads I get an internal server error message and it says HTTP 500...It happens ALOT and on many threads that i'd like to look at, and other people obviously have no problem opening those threads... I thought i'd figured it out yesterday, and changed the page to the vBulletin 3 default setting and one of the threads opened, and then when I went back it didn't! Grrrr....can someone please tell me what this is?
Thank you ever so much...:)

Do you have Dial-Up?
What browser do you use?
What operating system do you use?

No, I have a DSL, Windows XP, and use Internet Explorer...hope that answered your questions...haha... I also sign on sometimes through MSN, but it doesn't make a difference whether I do that or sign into IE from my desktop, still the same message on the same threads...
Thanks so much...:)

Download Firefox and try that. It'll tell you if it's a problem with your browser. And Firefox is just better anyway. :D

What forum skin are you using now? I'm using Imagize - Liquid. If you switch to that, does it work?

Also, can you post one of the threads you're having problems with?

These threads are all in the Playground, just to name a few: What's your current mood; 3 things you don't know about me; my thread. Other people seem to be able to post on these, i've tried refreshing the screen too, that doesn't help.

And i'm using the same skin as you, thought that was it yesterday, but it wasn't.

I'll give firefox a try, and thank you so much Erika...I do appreciate it!

I downloaded firefox, and it's working great, thank you, but when I click on those threads, they come up blank.

I'll bump this, hoping WeirdHarold or someone else has some ideas for you.

Nope, no ideas.

The mood thread works for me, but didn't have a "go to first new post" button showing so I don't know if the fact that it is over 4000 posts long is causing problems with the new post search.

The only thing I can suggest is to start a new version of the never-ending threads that are giving you problems and ask the playgrond moderator to lock the originals.

ok, thanks so much, Harold, i'll think about giving that a try... I appreciate the advice...:)

Ok, this is really interesting, and maybe another clue to what's going on...I was able to view a thread - What's your Current Mood - in the playground, while I was LOGGED OUT (this is a thread that I've gotten the error message with) Then, when I went to post on the thread, I signed in, and it let me post a comment. Then when I backed out and tried to view the thread again, the same thing happened, a blank page (I was now logged in) which is what I see now that i'm using firefox, before on IE it was the internal server message...

Any ideas, anybody? I had pretty much given up on the whole thing after Weird Harold didn't know what was going on, either, but now I'm a little intrigued, wondering what the answer to this mystery is...

Works when you're logged out and doesn't when you're logged in suggests that there is something in your preferences that is causing the problem -- or something in your buddy/ignore lists (probably ignore) -- that is interacting with someone or something in those threads.

The next few times it happens, copy the link you followed to get the problem (lastpost, newpost, lastpage)

Log out and paste the copied link into your browser address bar.

If the problem does NOT repeat using the copied link, examine the page that displays for users on your ignore list and/or buddy list and make a list.

Once you have a list of buddies/ignores, log back in and see if the problem repeats using the same copied link as you started with. For as long as it repeats, temporarily remove individuals from your lists and refresh the page until you find the individual that is causing the problem.

If the problem DOES repeat using the copied link when you're logged out, paste the link here so others can try to duplicate the problem and isolate the cause.

Usually a 500 is something wrong with the server, possibly it being overloaded, or a bug in the application. Browser, etc should have no effect on that.

Okay, I think I figured out my problem...when I switched my thread display mode to linear...all of a sudden I could get in to all those threads I couldn't before...
I have no idea why, but it feels great that it's fixed...Thanks to everyone for all the help and suggestions...you guys rock!:rose::rose::kiss::kiss:

All the best,

Glad you got it worked out, so what's your current mood?

Whew....

I'm glad somebody came up with that. I was getting worried that we'd all lost our minds for a minute while reading this thread.

My guess is there's a bug in the server app that runs the forum, that only gets triggered under certain conditions. For example, you have to be using a certain theme, the thread ID number has to be divisible by 6, and the number of posts in the thread has to be divisible by 13, and be larger than 569.

Changing your browser won't fix this, (although it's always a good idea to be using Firefox, rather than Internet Explorer) but doing something like changing the theme in your settings would potentially fix it.

Thank you, CD...that's very interesting...hmm...
I'm just glad that it seems to be working, now...much less frustrating!
Appreciate the input, Thank you! And actually, I did benefit from the firefox tip from
SweetErika, much better than before, thank you, too!
