Social rank 'linked to immunity'
A study of rhesus macaque monkeys may have solved a long-standing puzzle on a link between social rank and health.

A study of 10 social groups of macaque females showed that the activity level of an individual's immune genes was an accurate predictor of her social rank.

In a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team also showed that the monkey's immunity changed when social rank was altered.

I wonder what the effect on someone is when a person of status tells them they are doomed to die...

:)

I'm wondering howcome the perfessers ignored the status/health of real geezers.

If the hypothesis is correct evidence oughta exist across the planet in all societies.

Especially in high stress places like Africa or the Jadite mines of Burma, Myanmar, whatever the fuck...

... or certain communities that lack social status.

We're measuring longevity NOT prom gown angst. Longevity is the best measure of the factors that constitute good health.

I dunno, let me cite the classic "Heathers." Status seemed to lead to a shorter life...

:D

... and yet, the 'Untouchables' in India regularly make it to 90/95 yrs of age.

Their families may give individuals status more than the caste taking it away...

I might hazard such a guess.

I really don't know.

Looks to me like the perfessers wanna make a case against status, its not fair.

*chuckle*

You never know. Where do monkey scientists rate in the academic world?

Beneath the humanities?

:D

Testing monkeys is like analyzing chicken guts and tea leaves.

But theyre trying to induce a link with humans. So I say assess human societies, and contrast/compare survivors and deceased. My guess is status makes longevity likely via more resources and less exposure to risks surplus people experience.

They have trouble getting the little circles completely filled in...

... and they keep flinging their #2s.

Monkey science is facially appealing to pols and laypeople, cuz it reinforces the bias that exists against status. But plenty of poor people live into their 90s.

The cohort that doesnt fare well are the people exposed to risks.

I have great genes, but I'll still probably drink myself into an early grave, but hey, I'm told that's genetic too...

So it's kinda a wash.

I have great genes and will likely live to 90. I dont care for alcohol or drugs. And I love physical labor, I spend most of my day gardening.

I did all my risk taking as a young man, and tried most of it.

SES is linked to general success in life to, more then any other factor. It's depressing as hell. It's more closely related to success then IQ is.
