Social rank 'linked to immunity'

A study of rhesus macaque monkeys may have solved a long-standing puzzle on a link between social rank and health.

A study of 10 social groups of macaque females showed that the activity level of an individual's immune genes was an accurate predictor of her social rank.

In a paper in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team also showed that the monkey's immunity changed when social rank was altered.

I dunno, let me cite the classic "Heathers." Status seemed to lead to a shorter life...

... and yet, the 'Untouchables' in India regularly make it to 90/95 yrs of age.

Their families may give individuals status more than the caste taking it away...

I might hazard such a guess.

I really don't know.

Testing monkeys is like analyzing chicken guts and tea leaves.

But theyre trying to induce a link with humans. So I say assess human societies, and contrast/compare survivors and deceased. My guess is status makes longevity likely via more resources and less exposure to risks surplus people experience.

Monkey science is facially appealing to pols and laypeople, cuz it reinforces the bias that exists against status. But plenty of poor people live into their 90s.

The cohort that doesnt fare well are the people exposed to risks.

I have great genes and will likely live to 90. I dont care for alcohol or drugs. And I love physical labor, I spend most of my day gardening.

I did all my risk taking as a young man, and tried most of it.
