Hmmm....my list of comfort foods is long and distinguished.

Fluffernutters

Cookies of almost any variety, though warm chocolate chip cookies can be nearly orgasmic

Pizza

Macaroni and cheese - but only if it's homemade

Good homemade jam

Rice pudding

Hot and sour soup

Bread pudding

Sour cream coffee cake

These are some of my favorite comfort foods. Mind you, they don't really get eaten together. :)

Macaroni and Cheese (homemade)

Mexican Pot Roast

An Open-faced Roast Beef Sandwich with Mashed Potatoes and Brown Gravy

An Omlette packed with Ham, Cheese, Onions, Mushrooms, and Green Peppers

Banana-stuffed French Toast (and not from IHOP--made from scratch)

Lasagna

Deep Dish Pizza

Homemade chili with beans

Green-chili Enchiladas

Noodles with Sesame Paste

An English Muffin spread with Cream Cheese and Homemade Hot Red Pepper Jam (I have relatives that own a farm and sell jams/jellies/curds at crafts festivals around the country. The red pepper jam is to die for....[shivers])

Caramel Fudge Brownies

Sausage gravy and biscuits

My mom's potato soup (and only my mom's)

Cream of Chicken Lipton Cup O' Soup with some type of flavored croutons

The Spicy Spanish Rice that I make for my book group meetings

Green bean casserole

This chicken curry stuff that I make with milk, flour, butter (or Promise), curry powder, and red pepper flakes--served over Basmati rice

I must be the only person in the world who doesn't like macaroni and cheese.

see, to me, chili, isn't chili unless it has beans in it.

*raises hand* No you aren't.

Homemade bread still warm the oven slathered with real butter

Pizza

Tapioca pudding

Pumpkin pie

Most homemade cookies, but especially snickerdoodles.

Peanut butter toast

Tomato soup and grilled cheese

Campbell's Chicken Noodle soup -- not very sophisticated, I know

Chocolate Caramell Pecan Brownies -- these are a spiritual experience

Turkey and dressing

Bobsgirl just reminded me to add fresh-baked bread to my list. When I was growing up my mother made bread often enough that I didn't have store-bought sandwich bread unless it was from a school lunch.

Oh, and put me on the list for tapioca pudding as well. :D

But only homemade tapioca pudding. I tend to be a snob about homemade sweets.

BG, surely you understand that I would never buy that glue that the grocery store tries to pass off as tapioca. Right?

[smacks self in forehead]

I can't believe I forgot tomato soup (creamy) and grill cheese sandwiches.

I think I may be the only person who hates chicken noodle soup. And tapioca pudding makes me gag...EWWWWWWW.

SJ, you really need to work on that gag reflex. :p

I find it amusing that not one of us so far has included salad or fresh steamed veggies on our lists.

Boneless skinless chicken breast

Garden salad with low-fat vinaigrette

Shredded wheat -- hay bales, Yank, hay bales :D

Tofu

[smacks MWY upside the head]

Not to worry...it's just tapioca pudding. My husband loves tapioca pudding. I can't stand it. I do love rice pudding sprinkled with cinnamon.

Ohhh...and I need to add Sticky Toffee Pudding to my list. And fresh from the oven homemade bread.

BG: funny you should make that observation.

the other night, my wife wasn't feeling well. as she's a homemaker, she normally does the cooking. i decided that i would figure out something to make for myself, as i'm not some knuckle-dragging troglodyte.

now, i'm a confirmed carnivore. there's nothing i like better when eating than tearin a mouthful off a hunk of meat, cleaning a rib so thoroughly it could be used in a zoology course, etc.

so she was shocked when i made myself a salad. yes, a salad: a head of romaine, a can of chick peas, some scallion, cherry tomatoes, black olives and i think i added some cucumber. to that mess i also added some oil and vinegar, cayenne pepper and creole mustard. it was essentially what in a restaurant would be described as a deconstructed vinaigrette for a dressing.

and here's the funny thing: despite my meat-eating tendencies, it was satisfied with it.

You get points for the rice pudding and homemade bread. This smacking thing, on the other hand, may bring about some form of corporal punishment if it does not stop.

Ohhh...Caesar salad with homemade dressing made with fresh anchovy paste. It's the only time I'll get near an anchovy.

And my very own Chocolate Caramel Pecan Cheesecake.

Ohhhhh.....I'll risk it.

Anchovies make for the best pizza - but then hardly anyone east of the Central time zone has a clue about good pizza. :p

(not you, SJ - we've already determined that you're on the right side of the pizza fence)

Hey, that's not true! :p

I have a problem with anchovies on pizza simply because, back in grad school when I bartended, a couple would come to the place I worked, sit at a bar table and order a thin crust, double anchovy, double onion pizza. [shudders]

I can't believe I forgot this.

Chocolate -- specifically candy. A Hershey bar will do, but my personal favorite is Trader Joe's dark chocolate truffle bar.
