GRENFELL 64-5

Our cook, who had gone ashore to forage for some fresh food supplies, had discovered his wife mixing a few spoonfuls of the ever-scarce molasses into the loaf she was baking, that the family might, in 'lassie loaf,' have the nearest approach to a birthday cake they could afford.

Thousands of people wearing pirate fancy dress gathered in Penzance to try to break a record on bank holiday Monday.

Penzance last held the record in 2011 with 8,734 pirates but Hastings broke that record soon after.

The organisers had hoped to attract 20,000 people to regain the record for the most pirates in one place.

A count confirmed there were 14,154 pirates, 77 short of a new world record.

The event was held as part of Penzance's 400th celebrations of its town charter.

And what is so rare as a day in June?
Then, if ever, come perfect days;
Then Heaven tries the earth if it be in tune,
And over it softly her warm ear lays:
Whether we look, or whether we listen,
We hear life murmur, or see it glisten;
Every clod feels a stir of might,
An instinct within it that reaches and towers,
And, grasping blindly above it for light,
Climbs to a soul in grass and flowers;
The flush of life may well be seen
Thrilling back over hills and valleys;
The cowslip startles in meadows green,
The buttercup catches the sun in its chalice,
And there 's never a leaf or a blade too mean
To be some happy creature's palace;
The little bird sits at his door in the sun,
Atilt like a blossom among the leaves,
And lets his illumined being o'errun
With the deluge of summer it receives;
His mate feels the eggs beneath her wings,
And the heart in her dumb breast flutters and sings;
He sings to the wide world, and she to her nest, –
In the nice ear of Nature which song is the best?

Blank Park Zoo Welcomes Three Macaque Babies

In June of 2014 Blank Park Zoo welcomed three Japanese macaque babies, a male and two females. The females were both born at Blank Park Zoo and were abandoned by their mothers. The male, also abandoned by his mother, came from the Buffalo Zoo in New York.

Splash Down!

After taking off at 11:40 a.m. PDT from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on the Hawaiian island of Kauai, the balloon boosted the disc-shaped vehicle over the Pacific. Its rocket motor then ignited, carrying the vehicle to more than 30 miles high at supersonic speeds.

The environment that high up is similar to the thin Martian atmosphere. As the vehicle prepared to drop back the Earth, a tube around it expanded like a Hawaiian puffer fish, creating atmospheric drag to dramatically slow it down from Mach 4, or four times the speed of sound.

Then the parachute unfurled - if only partially - and guided the vehicle to an ocean splashdown about three hours later. At 110 feet in diameter, the parachute is twice as big as the one that carried the 1-ton Curiosity rover through the Martian atmosphere in 2011.

Coatta said engineers won't look at the parachute problem as a failure, but as a way to learn more and apply that knowledge during future tests.

"In a way, that's a more valuable experience for us than if everything had gone exactly according to plan," he said.

A ship was sent to recover a "black box" designed to separate from the vehicle and float. Outfitted with a GPS beacon, the box contains the crucial flight data that scientists are eager to analyze.

The Charles W. Morgan comes home (restored!)

June 25, 2014

38th voyage of the Morgan, the last of a whaling fleet that numbered more than 2,700 vessels. It is America’s oldest commercial ship still afloat. Only the USS Constitution in Boston is older. During its 80-year whaling career, it roamed every part of the world in pursuit of whales, including crushing Arctic ice, weathering countless storms and making Cape Horn roundings.

The whaling ship was designated a National Historic Landmark and is a recipient of the World Ship Trust Award.

After leaving Newport, the vessel will sail to Massachusetts for stops in Martha’s Vineyard, New Bedford and Boston, where it will line up beside the Constitution.

NEW BEDFORD — The clouds parted Wednesday afternoon and the venerable whaleship Charles W. Morgan, built in this city, arrived at State Pier from Vineyard Haven, closing a circle in maritime history.

The ship was towed through Quick's Hole at noon, finally making her way into Buzzards Bay, where she threw off the tow and set sail under soupy gray skies and a favorable wind.

She made excellent speed. Files said that the Morgan had reached 8 knots, the fastest so far, with fewer than half the sails set.

Slowly the Morgan was turned around and eased into place alongside State Pier, where she will remain until July 6. She will be open to the public starting Saturday.

These Modern Times-

Safety and security: Bags, backpacks, suitcases, rolling bags and any container capable of carrying more than 1 liter of liquid will not be allowed onto State Pier. Pocketbooks, diaper bags and baby strollers will be searched at the screening area.

This year fans venturing out to watch the first three UK stages of the Grand Depart, including the July 7 Cambridge to London stage three, can look forward to being thrown millions of publicity materials from caps to badges.

A Union Jack has been painted on the Grinton Moor climb near Reeth, North Yorkshire, while ‘Ey Up T de F’ has been painted on Penistone Road, above High Bradfield, Sheffield.

Tour organisers have neither discouraged or encouraged the tradition. A spokesman for TDFHUB2014 Ltd said: “Decorating the road with messages of support for favourite riders or the race itself is one of the traditions of the Tour.

“If spectators are planning on doing this, we would ask them to use spray chalk to ensure there is no risk of making the road surface slippery or causing a possible hazard for the riders or vehicles."

'Better Call Saul' delayed until 2015

In addressing reporters Friday at the Television Critics Assn. press tour in Beverly Hills, Vince Gilligan put the blame on himself.

"I'm going to take full responsibility on this," said Gilligan, who was joined by Gould onstage. "We could have made deadline, but I am very slow. I am slow as mud as a TV writer."

"That's what you're seeing here," Gilligan said. The writing staff is currently breaking Episode 8 of the 10-episode season, with each taking about three weeks to complete. Production on Episode 4 is set to begin on Monday.

"This freedom is threatened in many countries, and in Mali ancient musical traditions are at stake because they have been prohibited by law."

Dear friends of the Festival au Désert,

It is with sadness that we inform you that the Festival in the Desert can not be held in Timbuktu 9,10 and 11 January 2014.

"Caravan of Peace” - the Festival au Désert appears in Berlin

Mali is considered the cradle of modern music: the blues, reggae and Cuban music all have their roots in Mali. The slave trade brought the rhythms and melodies to the US.

For 13 years, Malian musicians have held the Festival au Désert in the south Saharan city of Timbuktu. But political unrest in the country has made it impossible to stage one of the biggest and most important music festivals on the continent.

Festival au désert in exile
- an exiled caravan from the deserts of Mali

“Until the music can return to its roots with freedom of expression and dignity, the Festival au Desert has become, a Festival in Exile.” –Manny Ansar, festival director, Festival au Désert

From 2001 until last year, the Festival au Désert – The Festival in the Desert – has been a colourful annual event in Mali, boasting exciting collaborations of Tuareg musicians and visiting artists from other parts of the world. In 2010, the event was moved from the remote Essakane region closer to the outskirts of Timbuktu due to security reasons. When the North Mali conflict broke out in 2012 it was decided that the next festival had to be postponed: Armed groups of religious extremists threatened to silence all forms of musical expression, endangering the festival to a point where it was not safe to arrange.

'Sherlocks' gather for world record

Crowds dressed as Sherlock Holmes stage world record bid

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-london-28383462

Sherlock Holmes fans send Benedict Cumberbatch unique birthday message-

"Over a hundred Sherlock Holmes fans dressed up as the famous detective to try
and set a Guinness World Record on Benedict Cumberbatch's 38th birthday"

The group are attempting to set the record for the greatest number of people dressed as the famous sleuth, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The event also raised some much needed money for the Undershaw Preservation Trust, which is working to preserve Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's former home. The cause is backed by Stephen Fry and BBC Sherlock creator Mark Gatiss and who knows, maybe Benedict Cumberbatch will be inspired to join these Sherlocks too.

yay! More Sherlock in 2015 (2016, for PBS ?)

Market share ?

"....people just want to ask Kerger about why the channel doesn't air Downton Abbey and Sherlock on the same day as the United Kingdom does, something that seems ridiculous to many of the program's fans. And yet Kerger always gives the same answer: PBS is always exploring all options, but it's unlikely to suddenly shift its position.

Okay, why does PBS refuse to do this?

There's really no good reason for it to do so. In fact, if it did, it could very well hurt both shows.

The U.K. has a tradition of airing new programs at the year-end holidays. But, the U.K. airs Downton Abbey in the fall.

America airs new programs in the Fall. But, America brings Downton Abbey back in January.

PBS is copying many other cable networks and smaller outlets in exploiting a period when the big networks mostly lie fallow.

OK What about Sherlock ?

Huge crowd that wants to watch Downton Abbey VS Large intense crowd that wants to watch Sherlock

"....though Sherlock is a huge, mainstream hit in the U.K., it's very much a cult hit in the US. This means the ratings are lower here, sure, but it also means that the audience is much more fanatical about the program. And that means it's more likely to go in search of the episodes as soon as they're done airing in the U.K."

Are there any other issues with PBS trying to do this?

Yeah. PBS can't just up and air these things whenever it wants to. It has to cut a deal with the shows' British producers, meaning ITV in the case of Downton and the BBC in the case of Sherlock. But the BBC, at least, has shown a willingness to deal if the price is right. After all, BBC America airs Doctor Who on the same day in the US as it does in the U.K. (though it's a distant corporate cousin of the BBC). So it can happen. PBS would just have to really want to make it happen and be willing to pay whatever the British are looking for.

(gsgs comment- Not counting the years they did not air some Brit programs on American TV, and did not send the video or DVD collections to America until the programs had been played on Brit TV for years.)

Redesigning the American Dream: The Future of Housing, Work and Family Life

Americans still build millions of dream houses in neighborhoods that sustain Victorian stereotypes of the home as "woman's place" and the city as "man's world." Urban historian and architect Dolores Hayden tallies the personal and social costs of an American "architecture of gender" for the two-earner family, the single-parent family, and single people. Many societies have struggled with the architectural and urban consequences of women's paid employment: Hayden traces three models of home in historical perspective—the haven strategy in the United States, the industrial strategy in the former USSR, and the neighborhood strategy in European social democracies—to document alternative ways to reconstruct neighborhoods. Updated and still utterly relevant today as the New Urbanist architects have taken up Hayden's critique of suburban space, this award-winning book is essential reading for architects, planners, public officials, and activists interested in women's social and economic equality.

The (male) MOMA curators missed the point! No feminists were consulted. (The whole cloth of the truth, was not told.)
1881, America had women who were architects. Frank Loyd Wright is wrongly credited with something a woman had created. :mad:

Also- For decades, women’s history was banished to the Capitol basement. A statue of suffragists commissioned in 1920 originally included the inscription “Women, first denied a soul, then called mindless, now arisen, declared herself an entity to be reckoned.” But an all-male Congress in the 1920s had the letters scraped off and sent it to the basement. In 1997, the statue depicting Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott was moved upstairs to the rotunda.

Now women represent more than half the U.S. population and are a key voting bloc. Maloney, who has worked on the museum effort for years, said she doesn’t know why anyone in Congress would vote against it. Washington already has museums about the media, spy agencies and the postal service.

“Surely there’s room for women as well,” she said, noting women led national movements for vaccinations, better schools, health care and more. “It’s my hope and dream that by 2020, which is the 100th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote, we will have a museum on the mall.”

What has Space X been up to ?

After months of speculation that the rocket company would chose the county for the site of a rocket launch pad, SpaceX officials today announced it will build the pad near Boca Chica Beach.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk made the official announcement through a news release from Gov. Rick Perry's office.

“SpaceX is excited to expand our work in Texas with the world’s first commercial launch complex designed specifically for orbital missions. We appreciate the support of Gov. Perry and numerous other federal, state and local officials who have partnered with us to make this vision a reality,” SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said. “In addition to creating hundreds of high tech jobs for the Texas workforce, this site will inspire students, expand the supplier base and attract tourists to the south Texas area.”

Perry said the state is offering $15.3 million to bring the facility to Cameron County. It is expected to create 300 jobs and pump $85 million in capital investment into the local economy.

"Space Exploration Technologies Corp. is facing a putative class action in California court accusing it of not properly notifying its former employees of a mass layoff of up to roughly 400 workers in the state, and not paying them wages earned before termination. The proposed class action, filed Monday, alleged that SpaceX ordered the mass layoffs of between 200 and 400 workers on or about July 21 without giving advance notice to the them, in violation of California's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act."

Dismissed SpaceX Employees Sue over Lack of Warning, SpaceNews

"The lawsuit, filed Aug. 4 in the California Superior Court for the County of Los Angeles, appears to hinge on whether SpaceX's dismissal of several hundred employees is viewed by the court as a "layoff." The lawsuit says that under California law, a "layoff" is defined as "a separation from a position for lack of funds or lack of work."

SpaceX Falcon 9 launches AsiaSat 8 mission.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 successfully launched the AsiaSat 8 into its intended orbit.

This mission launched the AsiaSat 8 satellite. AsiaSat 8 is a Fixed Satellite Services satellite designed to be co-located with AsiaSat 7 at the orbital location of 105.5 degrees East. The satellite is designed to provide service for 15 years or more.
