...I have it bad but refuse to take MD prescribed medication. I have tried various pharmacy only sleep aids but these generally have little or no effect. I did take one tablet called Dozile which made me wake up in the morning feeling like a zombie....

I am now trying Melatonin tablets (homepathic remedy). This will be the third night I have taken them and it's looking like they'll be thumbs down as well.

Any suggestions?

My mom swears on hot milk with lots of honey in it.

I use my extra time to read and write.
Yes, sometimes I am tired when my day starts officially.

Melatonin is a good alternative to sleep aids. The problem with using "naturals" is that they take longer to work. Unlike the chemical meds we rely so heavily on now that are a shock to the system, "naturals" work much more gently - tuning the body over a few days or weeks instead of totaling it out and rebuilding it - which is harmful.

A few quick questions - What dose are you taking? 3mg or 5mg? Is it time release or regular? And what brand did you buy, if you don't mind me asking?
If you have any other question about this, please feel free to message me.

I'm in Australia so it's an Aussie brand of tab - Bioglan.
Bottle says each tab contains melatonin 6x (whatever that means!!) and I am taking 4 tabs (max dose is 5).

I did wonder about a gradual effect. Maybe I need to give it time....build some Zzzz's ;)

Lokishoney is correct .... melatonin adjustment requires several days to establish the pattern change.

One of the most important factors is time of rising. If you can ensure that is a consistent early morning time and get sunlight exposure early in the day, the melatonin cycle adjusts better. If your system is particularly sensitive to light, you need to avoid light sources at night (eg TV and computer screens - yeah, sorry - and bright artificial light sources) as those can trick your brain into believing it's daytime.

Some who have trouble with getting to sleep find it helps to restrict sleep (surprisingly) .... ie they go to bed at the latest time they can and get up at the same time each day, even if after only a couple of hours sleep (or none). That is repeated, and it gets easier to get to sleep quickly ... then bring the bed time back earlier day by day.

There are very effective psychological treatments for insomnia ... well worth the outlay.

Okay, goggled Bioglan Melatonin - each tab is a very low dose since it is homeopathic. That's why you have to take so many tabs. If the amount of tabs per day bothers you, then look for a non-homeopathic type of tab. It will generally work faster, not by much, but some. And you don't want more than 5mg per day. Above that you will start to feel foggy and heavy.

http://www.natrol.com/p-74-melatonin-time-release.aspx - Not sure if this is available in Australia, but something like this is another choice. If your issue is falling asleep then time release is not necessary. If the problem is staying asleep, then time release is needed.

Since Melatonin is a type of hormone supplement, (Melatonin and Serotonin are secreted naturally by the body during the slumber/sleep cycle) it can take from four weeks to three months to have a noticeable affect on the body.

One of the biggest deterrents to the natural production of Melatonin in the body is light. If you are light sensitive or are growing older, you're sensitivity may be growing. If there's a light source in your bedroom, (television, night light, lamp, even a brightly lit clock, turning it off or cover it as you get ready for sleep will also boost your levels within a few days.

Yes, I can cure your insomnia but you wont like the cure.

Smoke weed.

I never have trouble sleeping. Nothing like a steady diet of weed and physical activity to make you sleep like a baby.

Ibuprofen PM works nicely. I take one right before turning in.

Well, whatever you might think of my mental faculties, I can assure you that marijuana degrades them.

And I dislike that effect.

I prefer LSD to marijuana.

Tell me you didn't just get ripped on Nyquil.

Yeah. Well, no. Lack of sleep does not bother me. I get up and work on my stuff or post or watch mature lesbians going down on each other.

Time is time. It does not matter to me if the sun is up or not.
