I have suffered with this for way to long (about 5 years) and have tried every LEGAL thing I've been told.

*Doing more exercise-Did nothing.

*Don't let my worries get to me and don't think about them- Great how do you do that ????

*Sleeping pills-HA endedup taking double what the doctor said and still not sleeping.

So as you see I'm desperate--Ok so those who know me are laughing at the desperate bit.

ALL help I'll be VERY thankful for.

Oh there are 2 things that do HELP they are pot and sex but alas both are difficult to find or afford.

:(

I used to drink alot...I stayed up just as late, but at least I might sleep 7-8 hours afterwards. Now, I just suffer...

Because of other health issues and because I liked it too much drink isn't possible for one reason among many I'm only allowed 1.5 litres of fluid a day. That's less than 1 and a 1/2 pints.

 :(

My last booze was back in 91 and that was a small glass of champers for a toast :(

Exercise never did anything for my insomnia, either.

Look into learning "self-hyponsis" or meditation techniques. I learned a rudimentary form of self hypnosis that allowed me to deal with the insomnia a bit better than without it. I could at least get some rest if not actually sleep, and wake up when the alarm went off.

Now that I'm retired, I deal with insomnia by logging onto Lit when I have trouble sleeping, and sleeping when I feel like sleeping.

Kidney problems?(or lack of kidneys?) Something that might help is figuring out where you nap the best, and laying there all the time. I'm a certified sofa-sleeper, myself...

Taking a bath right before bed may help as well ...
When you soak and relax in a warm bath it raises the temp of you internally and when you get into bed the temp is still changing ... which causes your seratonin to start an uptake and is supposed to help you fall asleep. I hope this helps in some way ... best wishes to you .

I'd love a nice soak in a hot bath but as I said above I'm on DIALYSIS and that operates via a tube into my PEROTNEAL cavity which only allow short/quick showers.

Weird Harold...I will try anything and will be asking about it VERY soon.

Thankyou both.

Go to testicular cancer support groups. Cry into Meat Loaf's gigantic sweaty tits. Avoid Marla Singer.

I know where you're coming from, as a 16 year insomniac!!!!!!! Occasionally a little (ok, A LOT) of "self-love" will earn me a couple hours of sleep! I also spend ALOT of time here!!!!!!!!!

I think that some people just don't need as much sleep as everyone else....personally, I function just as well on a few hours of sleep as I do on 8.....don't know about you though.....

Have you tried 3 mg tablets of melatonin from the health food store? Works for me most of the time.

I have had insomnia for most of my life... my mom likes to tell the stories about finding me awake 3 hours after she put me to bed when I was 5...

I have mostly just learned to deal with the lack of sleep... I do not have problems napping... so I sleep when I can get it... if my husband is driving... I catnap in the car... I try to get at least 15 minutes of rest (laying in a dimly lit room) when I get home from work... I mostly sleep about 3-4 hours of sleep a night... sometimes more...

Sometimes, I have to go the sleeping pill route... I have a job with odd shifts.. so on occaision, I have to be in at 6 am... if I am not sleepy by 9 pm... (yeah.,, like that ever happens...LOL) I take a sleeping pill... have tried a few of the prescription meds... but what works best for me is an over the counter...

I think the key to any thing like this... is to talk to your doctor... and don't stop talking and trying new things until you find something that works for you!

Been there...doing that

Well I wish I could tell you I found the cure-all....but I still Suffer. What I can tell you is that I have HORRIBLE anxiety attacks when I try to sleep at night...so I turn the TV to C-Span. That and Anti-depressants and Tylenol PM have helped me alot. I also find that when I work with my plants or paint (2 of my favorite hobbies) I sleep better and have fewer panic attacks. My panic attacks have stemmed from being anorexic for 3.5years followed immediately (without therapy or recovery) by pregnancy...in which I decided that it wasn't about me so I ate and never looked back. Right after I gave birth the hormone changes did me in and the panic attacks got completely unbearable. After doing a TON of research I learned that Anxiety Disorder and Depression are generally associated with insomnia (sometimes severe) due to the over-absorbtion of the chemical Seratonin. My Dr. put me on a Medication commonly used for Generalized Anxiety Disorder called Effexor...it is a type of anti-depressant called a SSRI...or (i can't remember what the first S stands for..i think it's Systemic) Seratonin Re-Uptake Inhibitor. What it does is stop the hormones in my body from thinking that there is too much seratonin there and producing chemicals that cause my body to absorb it too quickly.
It has helped alot...but not completely. I hope some of this information helps. Good luck!

You may want to check with an endocrinologist. You may have some kind of chemical imbalance, like an overactive thyroid, that is keeping you in overdrive.

Or you can go a more natural route and try acupuncture or acupressure to see if that helps.

Good luck. Nothing worse than staring blankly at the ceiling at 3 am.

Ahhhh...PinkOrchid to the rescue as usual!

I've personally have tried acupressure and it does seem to help somewhat. The tricky thing for me is trying to figure out where I store my tension. Once that's relieved, I sleep pretty well.

Again, like what others have said in here..good luck!

I'd kill for a "FEW HOURS" the best I can get is an hour and a half at the moment and thats with 2 sleepers and no sleep the night before.:(

THANKS for the tip I'll try anything....

I have always suffered with insomnia, presently I just accept it and have concluded that I am just one of those people that don't require huge amounts of sleep. I have my moments though. One thing that I have discovered is having a set routine. Doesn't always work, but sometimes you can get your body used to doing things at certain times.. including sleeping.

My ten year old also is an insomniac. I use melatonin with him. We call it his sleepy pills. Doesn't always work, but it can act like a placebo for him. He takes it and knows it is supposed to make him sleepy. Melatonin is great because it doesn't feel like a drug induced sleep. It is a natural chemical that your body already produces. In insomniacs, more often than not, their body doesn't produce enough melatonin.

Good luck!

here's a good link

Hi..... my sympathies are with you.... I have sleep apnea and know that a lack of sleep takes its toll.

Try going to www.sleepnet.com and reading the insomnia forums... you will probably get some more good tips.

These may sound odd but they work for me. (most of the time)

While laying in bed make up very complicated and detailed walks that you would like to take. Or re-live walks you have already taken. eg : around central park in New York city, along the Sciene (sp) river in Paris in the 1800's, around the entire country of Australia, down to the corner store visualizing all the buildings....etc

The other is fantasy too but it's about being invisible( <- huge blush).
I "have a nap" after wandering around interesting places while invisible. I've done Buckingham Palace, The White House, MI5 Headquarters ......well you get the idea.

Both techniques seem to turn off other things that I'm thinking (or worrying) about as well as making me feel comfortable.

.........yep, I can see me comming back and editing this post real quick !

Good luck

I don't think there is a TEST they haven't run on me over the last few years and NO trouble there.:D
