Student Vivian takes part in a paid experiment of the psychology department. Ostensibly, the question is how people react to each other in a confined space. She is supposed to spend three hours with an unknown woman inside a box, 5 feet in all directions.
When she arrives, the experimenter (a professor) is distraught because he has just received a cancellation from the other woman. The only way they won't have to postpone the experiment is if she goes into the box with Benny, a young assistant. She agrees in order to get the money.
The two are locked in the box (with an emergency button), and left alone for three hours. They talk a little and quickly get closer until they have sex. Vivian even wonders if it's more than sex - could it be love?
After the three hours, they pretend nothing happened. They fill out a questionnaire and Vivian goes home, not without asking for Benny's phone number.
In the last scene, the professor presses Benny about what happened? He sticks to his guns: It was nothing. Now it is revealed to the reader: The experiment was actually about confirming a new algorithm for partner matching. But Benny has really fallen in love with Vivian and wants to protect her.
Last sentence: That was back in 2016, on behalf of Mark Zuckerberg. The experiment was considered a failure - otherwise the algorithm would have been integrated into Facebook long ago...
