It seems to me it must all even out in the end, at least for any given category. Everyone's going to get troll votes and anyone who's been around here for a while will get friend votes. Maybe just bump up how many votes it takes to hit the top list so a wider sampling is required.

Now if I were going to complain about something, it would be the obvious disparity in ratings from category to category which seems to ensure that Romance and Novellas win all the monthly prizes. Apparently people who read those stories rate more kindly whereas certain of the harder categories draw more hate votes. Perhaps when comparing ratings from category to category there should be some kind of weighting to account for the difference in audience.

There has been a general lack of civility around here for the last couple months (I have my opinions when it started, but I'm not opening that can of worms). I will not divulge what's said in confidence, but let me assure you that Jammies is not leaving because of a confrontation with one or two individuals. Tonight she said the exact words to me that I said to her over a month ago (when I was taking my "vacation" from this place and she assured me that it wasn't as bad as I thought). Whether this is cyclical or something new I can't say because I've only been here about 6 months. However, it's getting more common to say, "You're a fucking idiot," then "I disagree with you strongly." It's ironic that a board of writers can't find better ways to express themselves than attack people who disagree with them or espouse a different philosophy. But it does seem to be intentional and escalating.

Lack of civility breeds lack of civility. I doubt it will get better, but I hope.

Last time, I checked there were only one or two 'authors' and few people were in the closet here.

I'd prefer to be an author too... then I'd be getting paid.

Until then, I say newbies can whine all they want about trolls, so can oldies... in fact, so can people who don't even write and who are just looking for good stories and have to deal with trolls skewing things.

And someone can't grow balls... but with some rather vomit-inducing (at least for me) surgery they can get a cunt.

Don't know if this is happening to other authors here, but I've noticed that just as soon as one of my stories goes "hot," someone slips in and votes it a 1. Almost never fails. Do you think they think that makes their stories any better in comparison or that this is an adult thing to do? (Those were rhetorical questions.)

Oh yeah... and to answer the rhetorical question.

a) It's very easy to be an asshole when you're anonymous... and my personal opinion is there are a lot of potential assholes out there who don't dare without the anonymity.

b) Trolls are actually God's gift to you & me.

I sit here and think about how pathetic someone's life has to be that giving your story a 1 would bring them pleasure.

Seriously, if I were ever that pathetic, I'd step in front of a bus... and I'm Catholic so it would be condemming myself to hell for all eternity.
