Incest / Taboo question

You should write whatever you creatively feel is best.

That said, if you want to bridge the gap (for readers) establish an intimate, psudo daughter relationship.

She can be:
  • Only child
  • Estranged from her real family
  • Frequently around (family business. Hubs travels a lot and she's not comfortable alone.)
Zealots will always hate it but it's not about them so much as upping the stakes/plausibility with the possible offshoot of still entertaining *some* of the blood relations cult.
I’ve already written 80% of it.

It’s meant to be semi-believable.

Well, I’m finished.

It’s called Mors Immatura, because I’m a pretentious bitch.

Need to do an overall read through / edit.

I’m happy with how it came out.

Em

I know it’s not Incest, but it is taboo.

Em
Yeah, but I think the emphasis in that category is very much on the incest side of things. Obviously, you must write what you want, but a lot of incest fans won't like the story because it's not 'proper' incest.

I’m used to shit like that - sadly.

I keep coming back to my three stories and saying this isn't correct. Good scores, (4.6+) and only a couple of comments about them not being proper incest. I did push hard on the age difference and the taboo relationship.

Sample size.

Also, you have enough quality/following for a little more grading on a curve than the rando submission.

Essentially the not *real* incest has a higher bar to clear. Prob not as big of a thing/noticeable if a quality writer is simply chugging right along.

Thanks - I think. They were very early submissions here, when I had only a few followers. My point was that a well written story with step siblings should do well from the taboo side of the category.

"should" being the operative word. But the hard core aficionados seem to want only "pure" family relationships, so the category is narrowing itself over time. Taboo is losing its meaning, here on Lit.

I don’t see my little story being a natural fit for Romance and it’s certainly not EC.

I think I/T is it’s home, for better or worse.

Absolutely. Don't overthink it. It may not suit every I/T reader's taste, but that's not important. Make it clear through tags and taglines that the story concerns inlaws, and you won't get surprised haters. But in I/T you'll get a far larger readership than you will anywhere else. That's the right place.

The tag line makes the protagonists clear and I have tagged it as well.

Didn’t really want to have “This story contains no sex between blood relatives” as my opening line.

Just submitted it today.

Some people will ding you for the non-blood relation, but those people are dumb and would ding you for any number of non-sensical things.

It's a family relationship, and even if not strictly incest, it's still taboo.
Agreed

That’s kinda funny 😄
It may seem funny, but being Irish, I can remember a period of about 10 years when I was classified as black. Whilst perfecting the categories of diversity we have today, there was a period when the Irish were instructed to enter their ethnic identity as black on those forms created by the people interested in constructing and monitoring other people's identities.

WTF?

Maybe it was your geographical location, but this does not sound right at all.

The rebuilding of post-war cities brought many immigrants from the Caribbean and Ireland to Britain, and led to the "No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs" signs in boarding house windows.

An Irish/English relationship is not taboo at all and is quite common (I can tell you). What would be taboo would be protestant/catholic in parts of Northern Ireland or Scotland, or similar places where flavour of Christianity is an issue.

Back to the main point, I find the incest idea between blood relatives yucky because I go for realism. While it's a trope, I like the stepdad/stepdaughter idea - particularly where an 18/19yo hottie starts flirting with her stepdad and calls him Daddy when no one else can hear, and he lets her know he likes it.

Uh... I've heard the phrase "black Irish" since like forever. I don't know if or how it's related to what you're talking about, but it's out there.

Geographical location = Central London.
There were never any signs saying 'No Blacks, No dogs, No Irish." I know, I was there. I lived through that whole myth.
I would know how common an Irish/English relationship is, wouldn't I?
