Incest / Taboo question

Ohgawd. We've descended into limericks now. Totally off the rails.

The story idea is a perfectly legitimate taboo idea. The only problem you may have relates to marriages and adultery. Is the daughter-in-law married? Is the father-in-law married? It would seem so. The adultery may cause a stir in I/T. Some of the readers over there can get turned off by adultery, in my experience. It's a small objection, but worth noting anyway.

I'm so tired of people worrying about what might bother readers.

Em's curious thread started well.
The questions and answers were swell.
But then Simon, that prick!
Dumped his crass limerick,
And it's all gone to smash and to hell.
I keep saying you must take your smut more seriously ;).

I remember when I used to think I could never write incest. Gosh I feel old, suddenly...

Right there with you. I'm still pretty sure mom/son, brother/sister will never happen, though. The idea makes me shiver. The bad kind of shiver I mean.

So, in my five year mission to explore strange new kinks; to seek out new stories in new categories; to boldly go where every man has been before, I was thinking about I/T.

Full disclosure: I wrote a bunch of I/T stuff when I was first here in a laughably naive attempt to be provocative (hah!). These have long since been reworked to remove the ick factor.

But…

Would father-in-law, daughter-in-law still be I/T. No blood relation, so a) I’m more comfortable but b) it might not count. More pertinently, I have an idea about how to write this.

But it’s pointless if I just get laughed out of court for mis-categorizing.

Thoughts…?

Em
I think that relationship is fair game for an erotic story because it does happen in real life, probably not often but it does happen. Some readers would have some moral issues with that relationship because they'd consider it a taboo imposed by society. Just as some readers might have moral issues, some readers would think it's not really incest because incest is defined as sex between blood relatives, not between people related only by the happenstance of marriage.

I don't know that I'd put the story in I/T unless you intend to raise some controversy among the purist readers. It might be better placed in another genre depending upon the type of relationship.

I’m trying to write in I/T
But I’m as awkward as ever, you see
I’ve ruled out relations
With consanguination*
It’s silly, I know, but that’s me

* Yes that’s a word - honest

Maybe make sure to tag in "In Law" sex or something.

To me it sounds more like "taboo" than incest as readers here expect it, IE full blood relations.

Technically Incest / Taboo IS the right category.

That said, reader expectations might not see it that way.

There are plenty of step relations in the category, like one of my favorites. Also as you say technically it is the correct category. Also categories are defined by what authors decide to put there, not by what readers think should be there. Authors drive the bus. Readers can ride or get off. Well, hopefully both.

I agree completely.

But we also know there's that crowd that WILL complain about it not being "REAL incest" despite the fact that that's not the ONLY type of story allowed in that category.

People complaining? About my stories? The horror! The horror!

Em

I know, right? 😉

On a more serious note: I think that as long as it's pretty clear right up front what their relationship is, you'll be fine.

Readers looking for "real" incest will probably just move on.

Readers actually engaged with your STORY will continue to read.

When looking to give your story some zest,
You cannot go wrong with a dash of incest.
Sure, non-con is fine,
Loving wives, so divine!
But none can deny that mom-son is the best.
Personally, I'm of the opinion that non-con is not okay. What makes wincest good, is how much both participants need it DESPITE taboos and social norms.

Personally, anything that involves in-laws or step-relatives doesn't count as 'proper' incest, and holds no interest for me. But I’m not the grand arbiter who decides what's real incest or not, so by all means write whatever you want. If it's a well told tale, there will be an audience for it.

I know it’s not Incest, but it is taboo.

You should write whatever you creatively feel is best.

That said, if you want to bridge the gap (for readers) establish an intimate, psudo daughter relationship.

She can be:
  • Only child
  • Estranged from her real family
  • Frequently around (family business. Hubs travels a lot and she's not comfortable alone.)
Zealots will always hate it but it's not about them so much as upping the stakes/plausibility with the possible offshoot of still entertaining *some* of the blood relations cult.
