Hi

Why do so many people have problems with sexual relationships between adult family members? What goes on between consenting adults shouldn't be any one elses business. For example, a man in his early 40's gets divorced and loses his house. He moves in with his widowed mother who is in her late 50's. One day she happens to walk past his open door and sees him looking at porn and stroking himself. At first she just walks away, but then she has a second thought and goes back and gives him a "helping hand". Eventually it leads to more and they end up sharing a bed. What is the harm in it? The same could be said if it were father and daughter, or brother and sister. They are all adults. no problem.
I tend to catch a lot of flack for my stance on it but here goes. As long as they are legal adults and consenting I think it's fine and can actually be very hot. The only issue comes with possible birth defects but there are several methods of birth control available to mitigate that as a risk.

Birth defects in people borne of a consanguineous couple are an urban myth . . . continuous inbreeding will cause these possible defects maybe 3 generations down the line.

My situation is an interesting one. I was adopted at a few weeks old. I met my bio moms side of the family shortly after I turned 50, a few years ago. I have a step sister and a half sister who I think are gorgeous. Would I have an incest kind of relationship if the opportunity arose, yes. Do I think the opportunity will present itself? Possibly with by step sister.

Indeed. Like I said I think that's the root of the hang up though.
Makes me laugh when some religious twat mentions the bible saying that incest is forbidden by their god . . . yet, according to the same tome their god clones a female from his first male creation and tells them to go forth and procreate . . . IMO the judo-christian deity has no issue with incest!

Lol right. They say it's forbidden by their God yet there are several direct instances of it in their little book of fables

Also, where did humanity start (from a Christian standpoint)? Adam and Eve..... who had kids...... hmmmmmm lol

Has anyone else read or heard that in some cultures it was the responsibility of the elder (father, grandfather, or uncle) to be the female's first, once she had become of age (whatever that age might be). It was his right/responsibility to receive her virginity and prepare her for her husband. It sounds a little sketchy but it could have a little truth to it.

Thanks, Litster WDB for that fyi message.

I grew up Catholic, and my understanding of the Christian explanation for why even the supposedly good characters commit such major sins is to make the point that we are all sinners. A second explanation is that God allowed for some rules to be broken in certain rare situations because there weren't any other options.

As far as the story of Adam and Eve goes, some characters just appear in Genesis without a lot of explanation IIRC, like Cain's wife. Did Cain's wife come from the Land of Nod? Was she his sister? The Bible doesn't mention Adam and Eve having more children or say that God made more people directly, IIRC.

Cain and his wife have to leave Eden so they move to the Land of Nod where they have one male child, and then Dad and son build the first city, together. Why did the two of them build an entire city when they were the only ones around, anyway? Did God create more people to fill the city after they finished it? Or was it mostly empty for many generations until there were finally enough people to fill it?

Anyway, when asked questions like where did all the people come from suddenly, priests and others would just kind of give you an uhm... the Bible's not really clear on that. The Bibles about teaching us lessons, like how horrible it is not to live in the presence of God.

Anyway, I'm a non believer now. That's just how I remember these things being (not really) explained to us.

It's not completely a myth, but people tend to overestimate it quite a bit, especially when it comes to cousins. I think the increased risk for first cousins is something along the lines of people who are a little older having a slightly higher risk of birth defects when they have kids. It's higher with immediate family members, but still pretty far from a guarantee that the kids will be mutants. It's still not a huge gamble. Considering the consequences, I think it might be something to avoid though, even if there's only like a 2 or 3 percent chance of a serious problem.

Of course, like you said, the risk goes up when it's happening generation after generation. I think that might be why so many societies have rules against marrying relatives, especially close family. If it's totally acceptable, the chances of generation after generation being inbred goes up quite a bit, especially in places where there aren't a lot of people around when looking for a partner. Incest being punishable by death is a pretty strong motivation to get out there and find a partner who isn't your bro or sis if you live on some farm or in a small village. LOL.

The European royal families were so intermarried at one point--most of them coming from the Austrian Hapsburg line--that there were common birth defects among them. One of the most notable was the Haspsburg chin. King Charles II of Spain was almost a complete idiot due to all the inbreeding that had happened.

More recently, of all the major nations involved in World War I--England, Germany and Russia--the kings of those three countries were first cousins, and had grown up together.
