In a Sunburned Country Story Event: Official Support Thread

My attempt is dreadful dreadful dreadful. Boringly dreadful. Drippingly dreadfully boring. Tedious. Pedantic. Arrange those adjectives any way you like, and you could create something better than my "story."

I have sent it to my Australian muse and he cut 80% of it. Now at least nobody would fall asleep during it. Now it's a tame vignette. Not even a steamy vignette. Just tame with Australian scenery.

I give up.

Thank you all for listening to my whinge. I cut a different 70% of the story and left all the hot bits in. Plus the scenery.

"Australian Wood" is almost ready to go.

Just curious... is there a blue W in the offing for those who win/place in this contest? Not that I am in any danger of doing it.

No, it’s not being run as a contest. Just a non-competitive “event” with no winners or losers. And no blue W’s. Just for the joy of writing. So far 17 stories submitted, and I know there’ll be at least one more (mine)

Don't give up

No! Don't give up. If it has shrunk to a flash story, then it could be the best flash ever!

Uhhhmmmm, I may have a problem.

My contribution in my "Pending" section is displaying "New", which usually indicates that it will be dropping at about 2:00 am the following morning.

The stories were supposed to drop on the 7th (or around there), right?

Thanks!

Your story was on the list that Laurel gave me so you should be good. Laurel said they were set to go live on the 6th and any additional ones submitted between now and then will be added to the event page

Great! Thanks, Chloe.

Do you know if there will be an announcement made on the sixth or do they go out blind?

There’ll be some sort of announcement and their own page, similar to the competitions and other recent story events like Geek Day and the Sirens one.

"Crash" was just submitted.

What a morning.

I woke up to a dead computer that refused to reboot three times. Kept freezing and giving me a white screen. Of course the story hadn't been backed up, except in that computer.

I finally got a copy onto a flash drive and then went to work submitting it. Geesh!

I have to wonder if someone up there is telling me "don't do it". It's going into the LW category, akin to throwing a piece of rancid meat among a pack of starving Jackals. (or maybe Dingoes for the Aussies)

So an explanation of "Chloe". I didn't get into this thread often. I keep a file of names I want to use in stories and cross check them with the most popular names in the year the character was born. Maybe it was subconscious or I don't know, but the lead female character is Chloe. I considered changing it, but decided to just leave it as is.

Oh yeah, now that the crisis is over, the computer is behaving like a champ:mad:

So glad to hear it! You had me worried there for a minute.

I've submitted "Australian Morning Wood" in Romance. It's short, it's set in an Australian wood in the morning (duh, I'm not so good with sexy titles). It pays homage to the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

Many thanks to ElectricBlue66 for teaching me how to punctuate dialogue (and to spell Strine).

A wonderful name and one any character should be proud of :D

Great to see two more submitted and I think I’ll be writing like crazy tonight and tomorrow. I had a good run today but lots more to write before I can submit.

EB is great as a Strine coach. I’ve been working with one of those online Aussie slang dictionaries. I was a bit stonkered to start with, but I told myself just keep at it and she’ll be right, mate, and fair suck of the sav, I think I’m getting the hang of it.

Any more latecomers besides me? I’m feeling lonely at the tail end of the submissions.

'knoath Chloe's picked up strine. She's also realised that Oz summer rock is the best in the world, bar none, understands utes and panel-vans, and now tells me she's sending a Chinese chick to schoolies.** What could wrong with that combination?

** An Australian right of passage, goes on in every state at the end of their last year in high school. When they're all eighteen, of course.

Perhaps the story should be titled “Corrupting Chloe” ;)

Tsk Tsk Tsk. Shoulda stayed out of the Cemetery over Halloween and been writing ;)

Shoulda woulda coulda. I’m just burning up over that one. All fired up now tho. As for Corrupting Chloe, ha! Too late. Although it is a first person POV. Schoolies sounds like fun tho. I’m sorry I missed it, if I had but known..... instead I was somersaulting out of the back of trucks while drinking. Try doing that and keeping the bottle in your mouth. And landing on your feet still drinking. This story is an ode to s bookies excess.

I noticed today that time was running out on this one. I had said I was going to write something but then the thread discussion got convoluted and a plot line wasn't solidifying in my mind. Took a look at it today and buckled down and wrote "Journey through Desolation," which should be submitted by tomorrow. It will be in Loving Wives (*smile*). It is what it is.

Oh that’s great 😃 - thank you 🙏

Chloe, unlike the rest of us, you did have a bit of an excuse for not banging it out over the weekend.

I probably could have phrased that a little more elegantly... but you know what I mean ;)

I've just submitted mine - a lesbian story set in Melbourne in 1996, 'My Gay Friend's Hot Mum.'

That’s great. Means we’re up over 20 stories now. Did 5k words so far this morning and banging away. The Holden Ute virginity scene still underway.... lol

Keep it going!

I learned about utes for this one too.
