I started out watching every episode in order. About 3/4 of the way through season one I decided that was not gonna happen for 6 more seasons so now I'm just skipping through and watching all the episodes with Q and/or the Borg.
Also, what's up with those Ferengi things? Who's the dumbfuck that thought that was a good idea?

Yes, I know I'm about 20 years late but I was busy.

Make sure you watch "Yesterday's Enterprise". Best non-Borg story OF ALL TIME.

While looking up episodes to watch or skip I saw that one is held in high regard. I will watch it after finding out what happens with the Borg Picard which is where I am now.

You're missing out on a lot of evolution and development with the skipping. Why bother eating dinner if you're just going to eat the meat and not the potatoes? Granted, the Borg are (arguably) the best antagonists the franchise ever created, but still...

If you ever get to Voyager just for the Borg stuff, then you might as well just watch the two-part finale.

It took me 20 years to watch TNG. Do you really think I'm ever going to get to Voyager?

Yeah, you're going to miss Wesley evolve from a dorky kid to a dorky teenager who gets in trouble for hanging out with a bad cadet-crew.

You'll also miss the ever-enchanting Dr. Pulaski! You know, she of the personality of a tree stump.

Man, I really dislike that character. Between him and Troi it's a toss up as to who I'd like to see beamed into a black hole.

And when they gave birth to that awful Commander Sela storyline just to bring back Tasha Yar.

I remember watching it when it was first on and thinking how super-cool that was! Pure genius!

Now, not so much.

What about Counselor Troi and that one episode where her sex-on-wheels Betazoid mother came to visit and all three of them got in that hot tub with Worf?

See, you gon' miss out on easter eggs like that. :D

There are episodes of TOS like that. Like the first time you see the Trouble with Tribbles everyone thinks it's such a great episode. Next time they see it most realize how really awful it is.

I've been trying to avoid Troi-heavy episodes. Terribly boring character.

"Hey, I've got an idea! Let's make this character who isn't quite psychic. She can feel emotions and stuff! That's not boring at all!"

A lot of the TOS were decent-to-good stand-alone episodes.

A lot of TNG episodes aren't.

Just the other day I watched Jean Grey play the role of a metaphorm who is on her way to her wedding that will stop her people and another race from more war when Picard falls for her and vice-versa.

If it hadn't been for Jean Grey, I would have stopped watching it five minutes in.

Troi was supposed to be reminiscent of Spock's psychic abilities and McCoy's "shoulder-to-cry-on-for-Kirk" abilities wrapped up in tits and a super-tight outfit.

That's where the evolution comes in through watching them all top to bottom. You can see where they tossed out stuff that wasn't jelling properly and how they remixed ideas to make them work better. This series also had the benefit of the emerging power of fan bases connected by networking that shaped opinion and writing of characters.

Also, if you like Q, you gotta like Guinan. They're pretty much the same thing albeit different people. Also connected to the Borg through history.

I never really forgave them for what they did to Tasha Yar. I honestly think that was the point where I subconsciously said "Fuck TNG."

And the Ferengi are fucking awesome....when you get to DS9.

Give me a break.

Guinan was worse than useless, a cheap ploy to add a "name" to the show. She was more mystic than badass super-being like Q. Her big line was, "Something's not right. I can feel it in my bones."

If memory serves, she wanted out because she was afraid of being typecast. Seems like a wash as far as her career played out.

But if you look at her like that, then Q is just a cheap deus-ex-machina device to advance story lines with something never fully explained that can't be killed.

Whoopi's a Trekkie, too, y'know. ;)

Q had flair; Guinan didn't advance anything other than a drink in the direction of a thirsty crew member.

That's true, but I can't throw salt at bartenders.

I can throw my hard-earned salt mine money at them for their pours, which is what I'm going to be doing in a few hours. :D

skipping the first season isn't a bad thing. it was mostly terrible tos rehashes and other stupid shit. even the actors think the first season was mostly shit. if they'd been on a network the fucker would've never made it to season two.

Also worth mention is Booby Trap and The Defector. James Sloyan was superb as the Romulan defector. "How do you allow this Klingon PATOCK to wear a Star Fleet uniform!" Classic.
