I'm thinking of crossing over to the dark side of Linux

I need to do a re-install, and rather than put windows back on here I'm thinknig of giving Linux a go. I have used it before, had a nice long course on it in school, so I do know what I'm getting myself into, but I'm a trained windows network admin, so I am a little hesitant. I don't have enough space to dual boot :(

Anybody want to try to talk me out of this? Anybody want to give me some good reasons why I should take the plunge?

Have you considered Lindows?

Or possibly a CAT-scan?

My friend got a copy of Lindows and it doesn't do either OS well IMO.

As for the cat scan I already know my brain if fucked so that won't tell me anything I don't already know.

I haven't used Linux or Lindows myself, but I did mess around with BEOS a couple of years back. Too bad that didn't go far.

I wish a company like AOL/Time Warner would throw their weight behind Linux. Then maybe...just maybe, there would be some better OS competition.

Linux is actuially a pretty good OS. It's just a little.. well... disorganised. Windows is nice in that you can normally find things where they're supposed to be. All things video/appearance are in the display properties, all things admin are in the administrative tools folder. I find that Linux is more like the windows registray (which we all know how fun that can be)

As for a company throwing their weight behind Linux, IBM is pushing the hell out of Linux for all their new servers. Also I find some companies are starting to release their own distros of Linux (Corel, Xandros, and I think one or two other companies).

Just stick with Windows, its more user-friendly... we're trying a Linux network at home and its not proceeding well.

Heh. I know what a bitch Samba can be. Did you drop the firewall Linux installs by default? I find that a lot of samba problems can be solved that way.

That's another reason I'm hesitant to go to Linux, the other computer in the home is a Win98 box and I like my computers being networked.

So any reason other than the file sharing issue that I shoulden't switch over to Linux?
