English people get upset if you get spelling or pronunciation wrong, but travel around the UK and you'll find all kinds of accents. Plus English is a Frankenstein language cobbled together from various invasions and influences: Nordic, Germanic, Roman, Gallic, Moorish... but then we're pure-bred English, St.George - Huzzah!! and keep the fuzzy-wuzzies out of our pure bloodline, close the borders!

Colonel gets worse because you pronounce 'Lieutenant Colonel' as "Kernel" - I gather it's polite. Same with Vice Admiral - they are addressed Admiral, unless they're ex-Prince Andrew when they're addressed as Cunt.

Shoulda let him keep the "Vice" part.
