There's a first time for everything.

This thread is about PM etiquette.

Superlittlegirl posted a thread asking what to do about an unwanted pm, and since I've often wondered about pm etiquette, I thought I'd ask:

Is it rude to not respond to a pm?

Personally, I'm very sensitive about these things, and rarely pm anybody out of morbid fear they'll ignore me. On the other hand, when somebody pm's me, I always make a point to respond.

Is there a time period within which to respond? If you're online, should you respond right away? When do you know when an exchange is over? How do you say, "It's been good talking to you, but this conversation seems to have died?"

I've seen women get a lot of support when a guy sends unwanted pm's, and I've seen them get support when a guy fails to respond to their pm's. Are the rules different for women than men? (This is a serious question - I'm not just whining here.)

Anyway, sign me-
Just Curious.

Sometimes, yes, and other times, no. It depends on the contents of the messages.

Don't be silly.

See, you're a newbie.

Not really.

The same as when oneshould let a thread die. Sometimes they comes out of the past.

Women are always right.

Generally, do what you please. Some folks dig you. The others won't. Who cares. I get PMs from BABES. So, I'm happy.

Very good question, Sandia.

Frankly, I have never had unwanted correspondence. I don't believe it's that difficult to be polite, yet not inviting of further communication, if that's what you want to do. And I even respond to "like your tits" from strangers most of the time, albeit with a simple "thank you."

As far as PM conversations go, I believe that if you're comfortable with the person, it will ebb and flow just as a natural conversation would, except with longer silences as we go about tending to our real life.
