I just got home from taking my last final exam of the semester. All but one of my projects are in, and that one's a piece of cake about which I am not worried at all.

My Music Department chair has expressed interest in me, and a couple other people putting together a jazz combo next semester for which he'll provide lots of support. He's also expressed interest in having me write down some of the great jazz stories he has from his friendships with people like Dizzy Gillespie. He's outlined by classes for the fall and it looks like they're going to group together really nicely, instead of scattered all over the place, and there's only one evening class, which means that I'll be able to get home before 10:30 PM damned near every night!

The summer is...well...mostly mine. Things are looking really, really good! :D

I'm happy to hear that your first semester back went good! I remember the butterflies I had on my first day back.

Have a great summer!

Thanks, Jellybean. :)

I feel like I've passed a major test in finishing this semester well. I had a goal I felt was really high - perhaps too high - and it looks like I made it.

I'm eager to begin the Fall. :)

It's kind of daunting to actually make that first step- but after you've dived in, the water is always warmer! I remember your post back at the end of summer talking about how nervous you were, I totally related to that. And I just got a feeling that you would be fine, because you really WANTED this. Ambition makes a big difference. I'm happy that you posted to update us all on how you did! Can't wait to hear how next semester is- sounds like it will be really interesting!

I'm jealous.....I'll just be starting a new job and won't have any vacation....nor have I played music in years. Used to play clarinet in school, and switched to tenor sax. Love that sax sound.

I'm mostly a blues fan, but I like Jazz as well. You mentioned Dizzy, well The Bird was from Kansas City, which is where I'm from. Yep, I love Charley Parker, Miles Davis, and we can't forget the Trane. MMMM.....good stuff!

That's very, very sweet of you! :D

I'm considering this semester a "shakedown cruise". I didn't take particularly tough classes, though a couple of them turned out to be more difficult than I expected.

Next semester starts my real foray into the music side of my classes: Theory I, Choral Conducting I, Group Piano, and Chamber Chorus. I'm very lucky in that my Department Chair has been incredibly supportive and continues to be so. He's basically put the department's resources toward making sure I do well. He's a very good man, an excellent educator, and very enthusiastic about my own enthusiasm. He is, as much as anything, the reason for my enthusiasm. :)

KC was also the home city of the Count Basie Orchestra, beck when is was run by Benny Moten. ;)

Blues is great, too. Most Blues and Jazz are so firmly intertwined that there's not often a difference between the two.

Very true.....fergot a moment about the Count...

I have several friends that play in KC, and you can't really call them blues or jazz, as they do both. But there are a *few* types of blues that are not jazz, and some jazz that is definately NOT blues. A few of my blues musician friends get really pissed when someone doesn't know the difference, if they are STRICTLY blues.....but to each their own, I say

Glad you made it.

Was all that worrying worth it? Your very smart, you know that. So next semester no bull shit okay? Just do your best, because your best is pretty damned good.

Congrats.

I'm so happy for you Jim. I know how stressful the last few months have been for you. I will call you this weekend so we can chat and catch up on things.

Let freedom ring....I got freed yesterday...damn it feels good....

When I first saw the title ...

of this thread, I thought of the Dominos commercial where that little girl is in the yard telling the cheesy bread.."You're free cheesy bread..you're free" lol

I know. It is rather early and I've only had one cup of coffee..:)

Thanks, my friend. :)

Actually, it did so a little good. It pretty much ramped me into panic mode a couple times, and made me more attentive when I might not have been. Then again, I always do better when I'm stressed. ;)
