So I was bored and felt like forcing my opinion on someone and there wasn't much going on on this board, so I went to the general board. See what the common people are up to. LOL First mistake.

There was a thread by this guy who said that the 'vast majority' of men cheat and so do women. Well, I just had to say something. Second mistake.

Turns out that this man is a total, complete, utter moron who immediately attacks anyone with a different opinion. I attacked back. Third mistake.

Got into a long argument that got pretty nasty. Most of the people were on my side and I wasn't the only one who was speaking my mind but all I did was make myself mad over someone who doesn't deserve a second thought.

Why? Why do I allow myself to get drawn into these things?
I really need to learn when and where to speak my mind. Kept me up late too and now I'm tired. Bastard.

Speak your mind. Defend your beliefs. He may not have been worth a second thought, but in saying what you believe and defending it you learn more about yourself and why you hold that belief. Thats the great thing about debate, it stimulates your mind. And if you ropponent is an idiot who isn't reasonable, then at the very least you devlope a little thicker skin so you can keep your cool when debating with an intellectual equal.

As one of the few vocal conservatives on a very liberal site I spend a lot of my time defending my beliefs. But I have also learned a lot aboutmyself, my assumptions and why I hold those beliefs. Despite the occasional anger and hurt, I'm a better person for entering into those debates.

If you're anything like me, the reason you get drawn into things may be because you believe you can make a difference to people by discussion and by being rational.

I wholeheartedly agree with Colly on this, if nothing else. Debating her, and occasionally some other poor conservative, on these boards has forced me to take a long hard look at my beliefs and myself on many occasions.

I remember four years ago when I first joined Literotica I got into several arguments or at least disagreements with other posters. I, like so many others, have gone through a learning stage. I now have a thicker skin than when I first joined and I've learnt how to use the ignore feature on this site.

The simple fact is, you can't argue with some people because they are not reasonable or rational enough to conceed when they're wrong. They also don't give a damn what anyone else thinks anyway. You seem to be an intelligent person though so I know you'll get through this episode and be stronger for it.

Get too spinned over other peoples opinions? . . . why not laugh and post because it's just too god damn absurd.

The fact is . . . people who want the rise get off on YOUR debate.

Ah, now you see the dilemma. Do I change my av because a perfectly straight and reasonable guy doesn't like seeing it or do I keep it because I know a few of the women like my av.

I've seen av's that I would rather not see so I ignore them as best I can. Having said that though it is about time I at least thought about changing my av. It's been the same one now for some time but I can't decide what I want to change it to.

Kelly darling, you did the right thing, debate is debate, but you will get little debate on the GB, mostly bigots, male and female, with not sufficient brain cells to control breathing and talking at the same time, so they argue in short bursts to avoid suffocation.

When faced with such narow minded peeps, argue your corner, or you'd feel shit about it later letting them get away with it and seem to beat you.

You should venture in there more often, it's an eye opener isn't it, and a bloody good laugh to boot. I often lurk in there and just post the odd controversial reply before retreating, strategic retreat of course, for a remote laugh, I'm no coward, honest

I have never hung out much on the GB but when I have gone there, I found posters with many thousands of posts and no stories or poems written. They also seemed very nasty toward anybody who didn't also have thousands of posts. I don't go back there any more because I think the peope here are a lot nicer, as well as being more talented. Just to keep the record straight, I have no objection at all about posting here or there without being writers, but the people on GB seem to thing that not writing makes them superior.

Being the great lurker that I usually am, I have lurked the GB and found two old sayings to be absolutely true...

Those without a sense of humor are completely at the mercy of us with one... and (thanks Rumple and Walt Kelly) Don't take life too seriously son, (or daughter as the case may be) it aint permanent no how...

I did learn something about myself a while ago... I found that I can be a fairly opinionated asshole if I really work at it... The trick is avoiding that at all costs, consider both sides, determine your thoughts and stick with them. If you have the testicular fortitude to defend position then its probably worth defending. If your opponent is an idiot cretin well, that doesn't make defending your position any less valuable... besides, sometimes its fun, like winning a soccer (football for the pigskin challenged, sorry Gauche and Earl couldn't help myself) game 10 to nothing. Not something you want to do everyday but it sure does feel good every once in a while.
