I wouldn't have been caught dead in one in high school, even though I was dead ass broke, but they're my favorite stores now. Whenever I'm in them browsing, I always find a rack of awesome dresses for 5-50 bucks that would be perfect for something like this. Dressy but not floofy.

now, I wasnt exactly popular in high school, but my sister was when she went so I caught on to a lot of the things. if you need to buy a dress, check thrift shops or clearance racks (it's prom season now, you'll prolly find something really cheap). I went to my senior prom and paid $27 for my dress off the clearance rack, and it looked damn good on me. the flower you can try a local florist, but a local grocer that sells corsages and the like may have something just as nice only cheaper. and then there's shoes. if you must have new shoes for this, go to payless or someplace similar that sells new shoes that look nice and are cheap. I can just about guarantee that your feet will hurt by the end of the night in them, but they'd hurt anyway if you're dancing.

as far as your hair goes, stop in a bookstore that sells magazines and look at the hair ones if you want something extra special. Pick out a simple style and you can most likely do it yourself (or have a friend do it for you) and it will look just as good.

Just go and have a good time. That is the first rule you should think about and not that it was a popular thing or not. I am glad you are taking the opportunity to do this. I had so many friends that years later felt that they had missed out. Back when the prom did happen they were very animated about not going. Ten years later they were like I never went. So enjoy the night with this one. Make due with what you have and any money you can spare towards it.

You can find a fabulous dress at a thrift store. It may take you awhile to look thru all the clothes but I'll bet money you find something that would be perfect for less than $20.00.

I don't know about flowers. We did it in high school but I don't think that I would wear a corsage as an adult...unless the dance was very formal. Flowers for the hair might be an idea.

thank you everyone for the advice.
see, part of the problem is that i'm soooooo not girly. i've never had my hair or nails done. in fact, i bite my nails so short that having anything done to them would be pointless. i haven't worn a dress in... well... almost 3 years, actually.
also, it's kinda hard to find anything in a size 22 in a thrift store. or any other store for that matter.
but i appreciate all the encouragement and so on. y'all are great.

doll I'm in not very girly inclined myself. The nails just file them down and polish if you like. I can't have polish on my nails longer than a day my body starts rejecting it.

I was never popular in high school, but I went to dances with my small group of fringe friends.

I never wore a dress to a dance... skirts sometimes, but not dresses.

See if you can find a plus-sized store near you... they're all having sales right now, because the winter season just ended, and I found some wicked stuff on sale recently. Thrift stores are iffy, I agree... sometimes you'll find a gem, but other times, it's all crap.

If you can't find a dress that you're comfy in, settle for a skirt or nice slacks and a cute shirt. Dont get too worried.. the point of a dance is to feel comfortable enough in your own skin to get out there and dance. If you're worried about your boobs falling out of a low decollette, you won't dance, will you?

About the makeup and nails and hair... go minimal. Put your hair up into a do that won't bug you. If it's just a ponytail, at least with your curly locks, it'll look gorgeous. Nails, I agree... file 'em down and paint a clear coat on them... they'll be shiny, but not overkill, and if you bite, no one will notice the lack of polish.

Makeup? Eyeliner and mascara is generally all I wear.

You dress however you would dress for an important occassion. Be comfortable! No sense putting on a dress and heels if thats not 'you'. Go naked I say!!!! You'll be sure to have a great time!

You need a hot dress, a smile and the desire to stick your tongue in your date before dawn...the naughtiness in the air is half the deal for a prom dance, in my view.

confession time: i never went to a high school dance. ever. usually i helped set up, then went home, and sometimes came back when it was over in order to clean up. actually, i think i spent about 5 minutes at the homecoming dance my freshman year, just long enough to see that i totally didn't fit in.

however, i'm getting another shot... sorta. an organization i belong to is putting on a "queer formal" (our theme: because you never got to dance together in high school). a friend asked me to go with her, but i have no idea what the whole tradition is like, so i don't know what i'm supposed to do. she's rented a tux. i don't own any dresses and i'm broke, so i'm not sure what i'm supposed to wear. do i get her a corsage? something else?

i'm so lost

If you dont have much money go to a thrift store or a consignment shop, there are always a ton of dresses at those places. Ive given all my dresses away to consignment shops.
