Following on from 'you know you're a smut writer when...' when someone said that every teacher at their kids' school reminded them of an AHer... What kind of teacher would you be or what do you imagine someone else being?

An art teacher - art always tells a story within the frame of its medium and it does so with a great amount of symbolic expression. Art also encourages individuality and emphasizes uniqueness, not that science and history studies do not, so I might opt to teach those as well as drama within the context of art to balance out the whole class.

I'd be a history teacher. For about one semester.

Then I'd run afoul of Robert A. Heinlein's aphorism, "I was a teacher for a short time, until they caught me teaching the naked truth to the kids. A capital crime in any society." ;)

I'd be teaching Literature, Spanish (which I was actually going to major in at one point) or Music. I think I'd probably have been best as a music teacher. :)

I'd like to teach younger kids, high school I guess, what I teach as an introduction class for college students today: The art of learning.

Kids get force fed a lot of facts in school, but don't get told nearly enough what to do with them. They need to know what goes on in their heads when they absorb it, how they can control that, and how they can put all the shit they are forced to read in books in a context that goes beyond getting grades. They also need to learn to ask their teachers "Why are we learning this?" (and the teachers need to learn to answer that question)

Liar, I agree.

Until Rob got canned for teaching the naked truth of history and I slipped into his spot, I'd devote myself to girl's physical education.

Rumple Foreskin

I commend Liar and Rob for their insight into what teaching and education SHOULD be and yet rarely, at least in most schools I know.

I'd augment those two fine minds with my passion, technology. Digital ethics, design, troubleshooting, understanding the problem and finding multiple ways to achieve a goal.

Granted I get to do some of that in 2 weeks, for a ten week run, but I'd love for it to be my sole profession.

the only thing I know...but this time I wouldn't want to teach college...I remember back about 15 to 17 years ago...I used to go around to local elementary schools with a sort of chemistry magic show for the kids just prior to the science fair to motivate them...then I would come by and be one of the judges for the science fair...

seeing some children being able to grasp abstract concepts and ideas and run with them is truly amazing...

Either martial arts or computer drafting. Those are the only two things that I'm really any good at.

I would be an art teacher, but not in the traditional sense. Yes I would teach drawing and painting but also about beauty and how art has influenced our lives, how it surrounds us and how Art is not just about "drawing good" or "Painting nice things".
I want to teach them to not just 'look' at things but to 'see' them. To take things apart with their eyes and put them back together in their own way, through whatever media.

Whacha got? I've never been paid to actually teach, but I've been involved in tutoring projects when I was in school and have had to train scads of people in this job or that job.

I have little patience for those who won't learn something, or won't admit that they have so you seem to be going over the same thing time and again, but I have a suprising aptitude for it otherwise. Give me a manual or set of curricula and tell me how thoroughly it needs to be taught, and I'm good to go.

Now, what would I like to teach? Drama...Geometry...Comparative Mythology...Games...Any of my favorite hobbies and interests. (And I have a BA in Theatre Arts.)

I'd teach them...

I'd teach them that they must find their own way in the world. That nothing ever learned is wasted. That they should follow their hearts and minds and be what they want to be, not what someone else thought they should be, no matter who.

And that's part of why I love art so much. :D

Although, I don't particularly agree that students need to be told what to with those facts (learning starts at home goes the cliché'). I think the good teacher encourages and guides and the better teacher knows that when a student asks, "Why?" the best course of action is to answer them and not expel them. lol

cartooning

On tuesdays and thursdays I go to a local elementary school during my lunch break and show kids how to draw cartoons. It's a great exercise for self expression (It also pays pretty good too). I have four or five kids that draw their cartoon strips as though they were journal entries. I'm constantly amazed at what the tykes come up with.

A brutally honest Bastard!

I dont think I would or could presume to teach them. I would simply lead by example. If you lie and cheat, this (something nasty) is the most likely result. If you are sweet and gentle, you are likely to get shafted anway!

To thine own self be true and do unto others as you would be done to!

And I am no christian!

The eyes of children see far more than most realize.

I can remember growing up in a very repressed society and it was art lessons that gave me the most concern. I am aware I knew how to draw a male figure but if I had to draw a female what did I do about the bit between the legs.

I hope teachers of today know how to resolve this conflict!

During the introductory fortnight at Training college we were told explicitly that teaching is all about learning how to learn.

After that fortnight we went straight back to curriculae and timetables.

I was a teacher. I taught computer programming, using my own, proprietary method. My graduates could return to work and actually do computer programming. As a result of my teaching experience, I can tell you that most of the "teachers" in public school are frauds.

It was suggested to me that I create a class in doll-making- therapeutic dollmaking, for people in recovery of various sorts. These are a little like voodoo dolls, except that they are made by the principle to embody whatever they feel is necessary- their anger, fear, hopes, whatever.

I've been procrastinating on it, because it seem like such a wrenching thing for the teacher to deal with....

Did you provide the pins for the voodoo dolls too?

I would teach a self awareness course. I wish someone had brought meditation and relaxation techniques to my world as a high school student, may be I wouldn't have fucked things up so much,.

I'm guessing it would be a "hands on" approach? :D Wondering what it would cost to audit that course. *sigh*

I teach music. I do it privately, which is what I prefer. To me, it's all about getting to know the student and working with what they enjoy, which you would lose in a group class. It takes a special kind of person to teach a group, yet find ways to include everyone. If I had the patience (and inclination to go through college), I'd love to teach math. I only had one really good math teacher, growing up. She stands out above all my other teachers (well, except my 7th grade English teacher...she had a 36D bust  ). She made learning fun and interesting and it was the only class I enjoyed until my senior year (computer science). Too many people are afraid of math, thinking it's difficult. On the contrary, I find it's precision and simplicity quite beautiful.
