If you read at work, how do you ...

About the only place I have the privacy to read this site is at work, and frankly it isn't very private.

But reading here certainly makes private places warm ... and demanding ...

How do you deal with this?

I'm asking because my place of work has only one "private bathroom" (a handicapped bathroom) and one of my co-workers today asked if I was ok. She said she had noticed that I had to use the handicapped bathroom so much more lately, and she was concerned. Asked if there were something she could do to help.

Second question ... do you ever notice the scent of excitement on a co-worker? I sometimes feel like everyone in the room has to know what's going on when I'm reading.

Maybe it's because I was raised in the age of everyone having to deodorize everything, all the time, down there ...

Or maybe just basic insecurity ...

That is too funny!!!

I had the same problem so I just decided to NOT do it! But if you simply must I would say reduce the window small enough to read then always have another window up in case someone happens to walk by. also you could reduce the font size to the smallest so nobody else can read unless they're practically right on top of you.

As far as the restroom issue just choose another restroom not frequented by co-workers or keep reading until you absolutely can't take it any longer then run in, get busy, get up, get out!

Maybe I also think about this because I have noticed the look of excitement on men in the office at times ...

I wouldn't read this site at work at all, it would probably qualify for grounds for dismissal at pretty much any employer.

If your employer is the least bit technically savy they probably are monitoring Internet access, almost all major companies do this and more and more smaller local companies are doing this either through the forced use of a proxy, network analysis software or spyware installed on the computer to monitor employees.

You must ask yourself is reading the site worth losing your job. If your employer is small or does not know much about the Internet they may not currently be monitoring your Internet but they can start at any time, most employement agreements indicate they can monitor your usage of company equipment at any time without notice, this includes the Internet and their computer infrastructure.

If you must read the site at work try downloading something like Window hider pro, it allows you to hide a window with the press of a button, it completely removes the window from the task manager so it doesn't show up at all. There is also other software that does the similar effect.

Note that all anyone needs is but a glimpse of inappropiate material to either let you go or begin monitoring you more closely without your knowledge.

Like I said earlier the usage of any personal site at work is a violation of personal use agreement most people have signed, the violation of the agreement combined with looking at adult related material from an office will get you into more trouble.

There are several technical ways to decrease the probability of being detected even by complex network analysis software but they require a certain level of knowledge of network security and carry their own risks because on most corporate networks using the techniques in itself is a violation of the security policy and possible grounds for dismissal.

I don't want to sound like a prude BUT it is trivial to monitor what goes on at a computer, I can set a system up to monitor a computer that will not be detected by anti virus or spyware scanning utilities relatively easily.

Yeah he's absolutely right! See, the fact that your over there bein' naughty got me all thinking about ways to get away with it instead of thinking clearly lol!!! They can (and will) monitor internet traffic and will call your ass into the office and that's very embarrassing. You can't tell anybody ya got fired for looking at porn!!!!!

Not a fine, upstanding lady such as yourself.;)

Of course if they have any sort of decent IS department, the new software will be found and that alone will be grounds to watch her closely.

As a former network manager myself, we routinely audited computers at the company via a program called LanAudit. It allowed us to compile lists of installed software on a workstation by workstation basis so we could check installed programs against the known licenses.

While a relaxed employer might allow his/her employees more leeway in regard to personal surfing during say a lunch hour, reading lit and then going to the bathroom to relieve tension is really inappropriate behavior for the workplace. She is risking her job and quite probably her career if the employer gets pissed enough to tell people why he/she fired her.

I do read at work. I'm very careful. My boss is not very techno so I figure I'm safe that way - its just a one girl office. But I have wondered about that sex smell when I run across an exceptionally hot story - or picture thread. I burn a tangerine scented candle - and giggle at the guys that give me a quizzical look!

*grinz*

Crazy . . . I can smell you all the way down here in Texas!

You're driving me WILD! :D

I don't read this at work, but this site would be considered tame compared to some other stuff I get at work. Not a day goes by when I don't see or hear something pornographic. Then, our discussions are often sexual in nature. Being an engineering firm, its mostly guys so that's why we don't get any complaints about it. And our boss, we'll he contributes to the fun too.

As far as restrooms, I don't do anything other than what's necessary. However, I do go to the one on the far-end of the building because its cleaner and quieter.

OK, as a long time lurker from my desk at work, what can I do to find out if there is a system in place to watch what I surf. Our Internet comes in to a router from a modem and then goes to many computers in our office (probably 35 or so). We're on our own router that is plugged into the main one. There is only 4 computers on our system, and they are all Macs (graphics department ya know). I'm certain there is NO software on my computer that I'm un-aware of. How can I find out if I'm plugged into a big brother that is watching me?

You guys have scared the poop out of me!!!

1. Buy your senior support person a beer.

2. Find out what's on the other end of the modem, like the corporate IS department.

3. Remember that a computer ANY where on the network can listen for all conversions on the network. All they have to do is connect somewhere on your side of a bridge. In fact, the bridge itself may be the pickoff point for monitoring. (Your ISP is also a bridge...)

4. If you use encryption (alwasy https:// not simpley http://) then they can see content. But they can see source and destination addresses, and given the address of who you're talking to they can very often make a good guess about the conversation...

5. The safest is to talk through a rerouter, like a remailer. Then it's the one that's doing the actually surfing and feeding back down the pipe to you. Of course, you have to trust your rerouter, and I know IT departments that block rerouter addresses.
