What do you do?

When you're reading along at Lit-- or a different board or whatever-- and someone that you previously hadn't had much dealings with or someone you thought well of posted something that you just find monumentally insulting, what do you do?

Does it differ from what you should do?

Note: I'm just posting a poll cause it's fun to post polls.

Too many answers! My head is spinning!

I generally go for the battle of wit.

Words are fun.

:D

I just ignore it. What's the sense in getting worked up over something here?

Ask in a PM.

If that doesn't help, I'll ignore the person.

If that doesn't stop em'... It's ON!!!!

At this point they're supposed to run away, crying.

:)

Depends. Sometimes I ignore it. Other times I use wit to defuse.

Too much agreement kills a chat. We all need to experience ruffled feathers sometimes.

Start with pointing it out, but then, in the same post, continue as if they hadn't. Even if the person's a big dick, I'm usually just point it out and continue on. I'll PM in some cases.

It's not often that I'll get into any sort of fight online, anymore. It tends to be a waste of time. Plus, I find people get more upset when you ignore their attempts to get under your skin. *Shrugs.* Which may be a rather childish justification, since, in a way, it's still waging war, but oh well!

Rawr.

For myself, it depends on the insult.

If it's just a "catty" remark, generally I ignore it.

There have only been two occasions that I made a few remarks back to someone when I thought I had been "slammed". But I try and do so without rudeness and with respect to the other.

Gosh, I just don't know. It has never happened to me.:D

I ignore. I have better things to do. Trading insults is NOT the reason I'm here at Lit. I have priorities and manners.

LMFAO

:)

Actually, I agree with His_<my>_Kitty. I try not to respond inkind to really stupid insults, and seldom respond to lame people posting lame insults.

I'm much rather be friendly and enjoy the people here.....and debate issues every now and then.....than engage in pointless flame wars.

Trading insults is the most enjoyable thing here sometimes.

If and when somebody actually burns me good, it's usually deserved.

It may take me a while to realize it though, I used to be quicker to lash back in the old days. Now I just sit here with my jaw hanging open in a complete daze.

This poll is ridiculously complex and the slashes next to the apostrophes are irritating, thus I refuse to participate.

Bend over muffin, I need to verify your clitoris location.

I like to point it out. If not to get some response from them, but to publicly chastise the offender.

If only we had stocks and gallows here.

I was confused, so I voted "other." To me "insulted" and "offended" are different things altogether.

An insult is a personal, ad hominem sort of attack. (E.g., "Hey, So-and-So, you're a moron.") In most cases that I can recall, when I've exchanged insults with someone, it's been in a joking way, or at least a way that I haven't felt insulted by.

Being offended by someone is another matter. It isn't personal, but a function of differing beliefs, values, etc. I am offended by racism, sexism, gay-bashing, and other forms of ignorance and intolerance. When I see that kind of thing, I might do any number of things: ignore them, present a counter-argument to what they say, parody them, or say, "Hey, so-and-so, you're a moron." :D

I merely ignore the comment as a lack luster response to something they did not agree with. Whats that old phrase about "sticks and stones...."??

Once again, M, I only post just to amuse you.

You are my reason for coming to Lit.

Juicy, you are my sunshine. You make me happy when skies are gray. You'll never know dear, how much I love you. Please. Please, don't ever take my sunshine away. Ever.

I would first get the person to clarify their meaning, just to make sure it wasn't a sad attempt at humour. If that didn't work I'd PM the person involved, to put my side of things.

If that didn't do any good, well, I suppose it would all depend on what they said next. I try not to let snide comments bother me, but as you know KM sometimes people can say the wrong things and need to be told.

Or in your case, beaten into submission. lol

Hey guys, don't make me have to write a sequel to my Tae-Dick-Flap-Do thread.
