If there is such a thing as "Western Civilization" . . .

. . . that includes Western Europe and the United States -- then it also includes all of Latin America and the Caribbean islands. All those countries, without exception, have national cultures derived from Western Europe.

Now, it is true that a lot of those countries have nonwhite majorities -- but "Western civilization" != "white civilization." We have many nonwhite Americans, and they are as much a part of Western civilization as any Anglo-Saxon.

So if you're calling for a border wall to preserve "Western civilization" in America, bear in mind that it would be totally irrelevant for that purpose.

I think Huffington says that Latin America is part of the Latino-Catholic civilization.

I read Clash of Civilizations. Huntington never gave a good reason for drawing that distinction. And he assigned Spain and Portugal to Western civilization.

"Western" or "Occidental" culture doesn't really include the Americas until after they were colonized- it was coined during a time where trade between Europe and Asia was this huge thing and there was a lot of culture shock. It's not "Western" from an American perspective or Asia would be "Western" and Europe would be "Eastern" because that's how geography works. It's originally about trade routes and what direction you went to take them. I've never seen it implied that the entirety of the Americas wasn't "Western", but I don't discuss historical geographical slang a whole lot in my everyday life. It's basically anything Europe colonized and took over the culture of- if you have your cultural roots in Europe, you're "Western". If you have your cultural roots in Asia, you're "Eastern". If you have your cultural roots somewhere else, then that distinction is largely none of your business.

The thing is, those places were, at the time, a lil bit obsessed with expansionism, so much of the globe was uh... let's say... "converted" to one "culture" or the other.

Another thing that makes that really stupid hard is that the distinctions really fall apart the more you look at them, because of course there's not one "Asian" culture or one "European" culture. The whole thing drove me fucking crazy as a kid.

"Occidental" culture vs "Oriental" culture is this whole big thing- but now that the world is getting smaller they're really outdated and we need better terms so a lot of folk use "Eurocentric" to make it more clear. "Eurocentric World History" instead of "Western World History", "Eurocentric Culture", etc. That way, we KNOW Europe is the middle point of what we're calling "East" and "West".

I remember this because it pissed me right off as a kid- I was bad at geography because of that shit. I don't like it when things make sense- so when the teacher is like, "Eastern countries like Japan", lil Candi was like, "BITCH HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A GLOBE? 'FAR EAST'? YOU ADDING SEVERAL DAYS TO YOUR TRIP BECAUSE YOU DON'T KNOW THE PLANET'S ROUND?"

I didn't learn about the reason for that until High School- and then I was still pissed. We can't do the metric system but we can copy Europe if it's gonna make shit MORE confusing.

All that is to say, yes, those places consider themselves Occidental. I don't know why anyone wouldn't?

That's not to say that those places are monocultures- just that they have a terrible, terrible history that forced that cultural standard upon them and now they have to deal with it, similar to the US.

So... yeah I mean... a boarder wall won't do anything about Western Civilization. It's not relevant. The two topics have nothing to do with one another.

NO, NO NEWSPAPERS DON'T JUST GET TO MAKE UP A NEW THING! I'M HAVING FLASHBACKS! I WON'T DO MIDDLE SCHOOL GEOGRAPHY AGAIN! I WON'T!

I'm not smart enough for this new world. Do you have ANY IDEA how long it took me to remember which were Occidental and which were Oriental? I can't fucking do this again.

Godwin's law needs to expand to include "comparison to racism".

Don’t worry. Those pesky Whites aren’t reproducing, so soon enough you guys will take over.

How about an electric fence?

“Non-Whites not allowed zzz…”

Maybe the Catholic-Latinos and Orthodox-Oriental-(Christians)-Slavos left Germano-Celto-Protestants with little wiggle-room; and Europe is essentially the western rump of Eurasia. As America grew, I supposed it co-opted the name as it was more Western—as for Aboriginals?—leave that until the mid-to-late 20th century.

Don't have to be white to be a Westerner.
