ID'ing a body (not to get too heavy, but I have a question, sorry)

Ok for the past couple of days here in London one of the main news items has been this story about this guy who has killed at least two (possibly more) prostitutes. At first their identities were unknown, but I was just out at the store a little bit ago and I caught the headline of the evening edition newspaper, it says that one of the murdered women was identified - by her breast implants.

I did a little poking around on the net to find out how this is possible - do they have serial numbers, or something? - but I didn't find any answers. My husband reckons that they probably do have some kind of identification numbers or something, in the event of a defect or problem or whatever.

Anyone ever heard of such a thing?

Implants are produced in batches and numbered.

So if there is a problem with them, the hospital can notify the company, or for iding a dead body<guess that's secondary>

I did read somewhere that implants did have a barcode chip in them, but i am unsure where that info was found at I will keep an eye out for it though

you may want to call a local clinic that does that sort of alteration for info

I've seen what I assumed were serial numbers on implants when watching some documentary or news reports.

I don't know it for a fact.

Breast implants, do have a serial number of some sort on the implant, they are from the company that makes them as well as from the doctor or doctor's office who bought those implants. So they can track down who the implants belong to ...

I learned this from watching my all time favorite shows on t.v... C.S.I ...

Seen it on an episode of Law & Order. I guess they have manufacturers numbers/batch numbers on them. Cops call the manufacturer and find out which doctors got bags in that batch. They then contact the doctors for a list of people who got implants from those doctors and then match them up with descriptions and then start looking for them.

actually they are lot numbers. very specific to the implant themselves each one has its own. we put them on the OR record, on the progress notes in the chart, and give the patient a card with the number on it when they leave the OR suite. so...the hospital has a record, the doc does, and the patient does. oh. and a record goes back to the company as well.

I am sure the number can be read ... regardless of the " deteriorated" factor.

Blimey. I had no idea. What about if you get like an artificial knee or a hip replacement? I'm guessing then that all kinds of parts must have to carry some sort of identifying marks/numbers.

LOL 'my country' is actually the USA, so yeah, they do. I just live over here now is all. They don't have the death penalty here though.

They do have the guy, actually have had him for a couple of days. They found the torsos in his flat, and picked him up a few days later. So hopefully he'll go away for a good long time.
