Where has all the ice gone? I used to be able to throw on the skates as a kid and pretty much skate on any exposed water in the winter. That was up through 8th grade before I went to boarding school, so call it 1982. Now for the life of me I can't remember when you could safely skate on a pond.

It sort of depends where you are. We are from central Illinois. We had ice, sometimes over a foot thick.
My wife is from Minnesota. She remembers her dad taking a shortcut across a big lake to work in winters.
Ever since we've moved to Florida I haven't been ice skating or ice fishing. I'm sure not gonna drive the truck across any lakes down here. Although I've read about some who have tried.
I agree, it's climate change!

This winter was bad. Our club had to cancel ice fishing derbies, disallow members to venture on the ice and cancel a charity pond hockey game. It's more variable these days. Back when I was kid it was snow from early Dec. to mid-March regularly. Still get some good winter weather but no predicting when. Pond could ice up well before Yule or thinly by Feb.

It seems to me that in the 70s low pressure systems would brew up in Colorado and bring heavy snow fall to SW Ontario. Now they seem to brew up in Texas, slip further south and bring rain and freezing rain more often.

As kids we would look at newspaper weather forecast for LP systems and fronts in Colorado and hope for snow days. Now we just have more reasons to hate Texas. Bastards!

Weather varies by the decade and centuries. Human think so short term while the world operates on a different time scale. 100k years is a miniscule time period in the Earth's history. Yet for us a long running TV series of 7 years or a governing regime in for 8 is ancient history.

I'm sure humans are influencing the weather but it will take 100s of years for any definite measurements to make sense. By then hugely variable weather will seem the norm.

I do miss a good winter. Lots of good clean snow and thick ice on ponds. Not the crappy Texan born freezing rain and above 0C temps we see today.

Blame Texas! Tiny little pissant birth place of lousy weather. I think tornados come out of Texas too. Bastards!

Dude, where does a guy find the good stuff out here on the East Coast?

Oh man I wish I could help you.

You guys live in such a bizzaro upside down weird world out there, you might as well be in Australia or some shit. Out here we go to dispensaries like civilized people :D

The DEA hates pond hockey.
