I hate trying to write, but found I do enjoy helping to rewrite, though I have only done it just the one time, so far.

My wife wrote a 1-act play set in the Texas Panhandle during WWII. The University she was attending at the time put the play on, and I went with her to the audition. Seems the director had all manner of young people auditioning, but the script called for one older character (early 70's), so I told the director if she wanted a more authentically old guy for the role, I volunteered. She questioned my acting experience, so I started telling her about the plays and musicals I'd been cast in previously. She cut me off with, "You're cast."

At the read-through, I noticed something about my character that I hadn't noticed while casually reading the play. Once the read-through was finished, the director told us what she got from reading the play. I was amazed, in that it taught me how very shallow my conscious reading is. She did not get what I had a problem with, so when she asked for our input, I raised my hand and said that my character sounded really well educated and effeminate for a 1940's Texas rancher. The director looked back at just one of my character's speeches, and agreed. My wife got tasked with rewriting that character, and I helped. The director *and* my wife seemed delighted with the result.

I don't know how well I would work at rewriting other characters. This one was straightforward, not well-educated, and generally honest and well-intentioned. Most of the changes resulted in things being stated simply and with few words, but that was because of the character.

There are many kinks and fetishes I'm not into, but this is something I just *might* have a talent at, and I need to start somewhere.
