If I get the one I want it could hurt my chances at job promotions later. :( Maybe?

I want an oriental dragon on the back of my neck. Red body with blue details.

Any suggestions?

Also want winged Isis as an arm band.

Have you thought of Henna tattoos? They dont last as long and are only the one color but you could see what kind of reaction you get at work. Then if its bad just tell them it goes away in a month or less. Plus these dont hurt!!!

Actually its not the job now tht I am worried about- I am going back to school for managment crap and will be appling for jobs in couple of years were it could be a potential NO. In the food service or restaurant business most likely..

They wouldn't care were I work now.

Thanks Lost Cause, I found one I really like. I even now where I want to go for the work. Hmm, Maybe If I keep my hair down, it won't be noticed until after I receive a job offer.

I have thought of having it somewhere else, but it has spiritual significance and doesn't feel right anywhere else.

Actually, you can get henna in varrying shades. I've done it. You just have to shop around. They've got henna dyes that'll leave a stain with a reddish, greenish, brownish, or blackish shade.

If you get a tattoo and you intend to work some place where you're not your own boss or your boss isn't similarly tattooed, put the tat in a place that's easily covered. It will adversely effect your job if you can't cover it up.

I've got a huge one, myself, but it's on my outer thigh where I can show it when I want, but cover it in a professional setting.

How high up on the neck ??

A high collar and long hair can cover a lot if its not spread too far around the sides.

I guess being a non-tattooed person, I have to ask why you want a tattoo. Is it that compelling that you have to get one?? Or can you, as some of the other folks here have suggested, get one a little more discrete?

At least you seem to be thinking somewhere further down the road so that's a solid sign of maturity so mull it over. The henna ideas aren't too bad either from the sounds of it.

I guess you have to weigh personal vanity (& I'll assume that's why you want a tattoo) over possible financial gain somewhere down the road.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Like everything else---Its a matter of personal choice..Sometimes the only answer you need is "just because".. But it was already stated that in this case it has some spiritual significance to the person in question.

I got my ones after about 15 years of thinking about it
1 was just because
The 2nd because it has significance to me
The 3rd to commemerate the birth of my son

Different reasons at different times.:D

I'm all for individual choices & am in full agreement with whatever Chantal chooses. I'm also in favor of whatever anyone wants to tattoo on their bodies.

I just want Chantal to weigh her choices & see what the rush is to get one anytime soon. Make sure your head & your heart agree that's what they want and be prepared to accept the accolades & possible criticism from it. You already know that it might harm promotional chances so be prepared for discrimination. I hope that it doesn't affect you but you already know it could.

Again...good luck.

Lust Engine is of course making sensible and correct comments but does anybody think its a little odd that in this day and age where we can no longer discriminate against people based on race , colour, sexual preference ,gender etc (although yes obviously it does still happen) that Tattoo's are still seen as a reason not to employ somebody...How many corporate suits are hiding a tat or 2 ??;)

Well, maybe it has to do with conservative clientel? :)

hmmm, I think a turtleneck along with my hair would cover it.

as for rush to get one-- I have actually been planning this for a couple of years. It is cost prhibitive though. The shop I want to go to is very expensive, but very good.

This is the way it always is. I got lucky. My tattoo artist was the nephew of one of my mother's close friends. He does excellent work and I'd known him for a long time both as a friend and a tattoo artist....since he'd done it for so long and his work blew me away I figured he was the one to go with. Got a good deal on it too. ;)

Tattoos aren't about "vanity" unless you're getting eyeliner or some such shit.

And to answer the question, sorry about not doing that...

It will matter for your job. I've worked in the restaurant industry for a number of years and the only people that had visible tats were line cooks and some chefs. If you're working in the front of the house, unless you can cover it, you're going to have a problem.

Or if one was to tattoo "I'm too sexy for a shirt" across their back and parade around?

I agree, to me it's about self-expression.
But everyone has their own reasons. :)

A turtleneck in the summer? What about hot days when you want to put your hair up? You'll never be able to cut it shorter than your collar and you'll never be able to put it up at work. If you don't wear scarves on a regular basis, you won't be able to hide it.

Before you get the tat, get some similarly colored and sized temporary tattoo and put it in the spot you want to have your tat done. Wear it around on weekends, visit friends, family, church, anyone who likely comment on the tattoo should they see it. Wear your normal get up. That'll tell you if it's visible when you don't want it to be.

The simple fact is that you can't move in most professional arenas if you have visible tattoos. If you put it on your neck, even with hair and turtlenecks and scarves, it's going to be visible at some point at the wrong moment. Particularly if you're a woman.

If you can't relocate the tat on your body for whatever reasons, then consider going the more temporary henna route when you feel the need to have it. Can you try lower on the neck, so the top is just below the collar line?

Really!!! Cool I so want to try and get into this. I have just started to read up on how to mix it but as of yet have not read about green. I will have to look.

I just got my first one the other day and love it. Not only for the fact I can get a new one next month of something different but also for the fact there is no pain.

I plan to keep doing them untill I find just the one That says Me and then get a "real" tattoo of it.

Why don't you get a job in the circus, you bloody freak.....???

KM-- I will probably try the temp one first, and ya, may have to get it a little lower on my neck.

I like henna but- I want something permanent.

my how suprisingly close to the truth you are considering you know less than 1/100th of my personality or life. ;)

But it is much too simplistic-- let's see if I can help you out.

Try this-- Imaginative, decadent, hedonistic, pagan and you may add the words goddess, freak or bitch depending on my mood.

But that is irrelavent as I obviously have a much more interesting life than you and certainly, a larger vocabulary.
