There's this anonymous poster who seems to be going to all my stories and poems and posting nasty little comments that to me show he didn't even bother to read the story (when you say there are multiple spelling errors and I re-check and find nothing, that raises red flags) or poem. Serious hater... Any words of support so I can get over the obnoxious troll? I know there's nothing I can actually do about him.

Actually there is. If he/she/it are also bombing your stories, you can report it to Laurel in a PM and ask for her to run a sweep on your story list. You might be surprised how much your scores can come up.

It happens to all of us from time to time.

Good advice from TxRad. Of course, you can delete any comments "anonymous" may have made if that's how you're being harrassed.

You can very probably even identify the sender if he/she bothers you enough to be worth the time and trouble, or the expense if you need to hire a pro to track him/her down. Bottom line, there's no such thing as complete anonymity online.

The latter is probably not worth it but the possibility exists.

I've just had a peek at a couple of the comments this person has made and I see your point. One scathing review is fair enough, I suppose, but why would you read all of an author's stories (or at least pretend to) if you thought their work was bad? Clearly (s)he is just a nuisance troll and not a serious reader.

Try not to let him/her get to you. Sticks and stones. I doubt it'll make much difference to your true fan base. Most readers have already read your story and made up their own minds about it by the time they reach the comments page.

That's how I got the "Stalker" idea

The person started bashing me 'cause I deleted the posts that weren't useful, and just plain hating.

It's frustrating 'cause, honestly, I don't have much writing experience. I went to school for writing, but I don't really think I learned much, looking back. It takes time to really get a feel for your style (I read some of the things I wrote when younger, journals and a novel I started) and I'm like... eeew... I'll be completely re-writing all ten chapters of the novel at some point. I like LIT 'cause you get to write about anything and get a chance to see what works first hand, get inspired and encouragment.

I might have taken the first few negative comments a bit personally but that's why I deleted them. And honestly, when you call the author names, how is someone supposed to take it?

I know I'm an overly emotional person, so it's nice to know someone else agrees that it's overkill, and not just me.

If they want to post something that can't be deleted they can write their own stories.

I suggest you delete all his comments (and your responses to him). If comments from him reappear, KEEP deleting them without prejudice. His rambling comments show no organization and irrational behavior. Silence on your part will convince him that his future efforts will be futile. If he can't get your goat, he has nothing.

They'll do that upon request? That's good to know. I noticed that I would get a random spurt of 3-4 votes (all 1s) out of nowhere...the latest have been around milestones in the main contests going on, so can only imagine they're down-voting because of that. But contests seem to inspire mass sweeps anyway (and seem to erase more of my high votes than the lows...but oh well).

Post a note at the end of the story warning your readers that if they vote more than once all their voters will be swept throughout Lit.

It will help with losing high votes, believe it or not.

Thanks Again!

I did delete all the nasty comments, and my own responses. I'm going to do my best to use self control and not respond to trolls. It's the advice I would give someone else, but we all know advice is easier to give than to follow, LOL.

I've also asked Laurel to check for sweeps, the end note idea is nice to know!

Also, can I change the tags on my stories? I noticed that I didn't tag them very well (seperating words instead of keeping them as phrases) and it makes some of my stories harder to find. Do I just resubmit them with better tags and put the note: EDIT FOR TAGS?

I've never tried editing tags so I have no idea. Maybe someone else will know.

Again.....

He's at it again, posting more comments and voting ones on the stories/poems he didn't look at the last time. How do I know? References made to deleted posts. SIGH

If I turn off accepting anonymous comments, will the ones that are there now remain, and can I turn them back on?

I think so. You might do that and give the jerk a few months to find someone else to torment and then open them back up again.

Why should HE be in control? Delete him again. Every fricking day he comments, remove them and never acknowledge his presence. Don't even mention it here. It's the silent treatment that will destroy him. If he doesn't know you are upset, he loses all satisfaction. I would continue to report him to Laurel. I believe even when you delete his comments, the server has records of who said what to whom. His ass will get burned eventually.

I think I have the same troll. I suspect you may have contaminated yourself by putting a story in the Loving Wives section.

For some reason there are trolls out there who see themselves as guardians of the concept of heterosexual marriage, and any sign of adultery (I think male adultery is okay in their eyes for some reason) incurs their wrath.

well Lit will simply stop allowing ppl to post 'anon' comments.
many like to read and comment but like that privacy - these trolls will ruin it for everyone!!!

I wouldn't remove the anonymous option completely from LIT, authors have the choice to just not accept them, which is what I'm going to do for now.

Thanks everyone!

Strange....

I removed the ability for Anons to comment, and I swear my stories are now getting MORE feedback than before... From registered LIT people, of course, but it's still STRANGE. Anyone else experienced, or is aware of this phenomenon or is it just 'cause I have more stories out there???

This is simply what happens when you write well enough to tug someone's emotional strings. Good job, revel and bask in your glory, cause they jelly.

Yep. That's how you do it but add the word "EDITED" to the story title when you resubmit or you might end up with two versions of the same story.

Awe, that's sweet! I'm still frustrated 'cause two story lines seem to be in the most challenging categories: Incest and Loving Wives. Those stories have extremely good feedback, but the votes suck. I've been told it's 'cause I'm not doing what MOST writers in those categories do. It's kinda funny....

Loving Wives isn't supposed to have real love in it and Incest is supposed to be all about love, where my loving wives stories are about a wife who is faithful and loving with her husband and my incest story is about a father who abuses his daughter who is then rescued by her long lost step brother, who has to pretend to abuse her, so the love took three chapters to make an appearance, ROFL.

So I've contented myself that those will just never do well enough.

My werewolf and novella are doing good but I'm not sure where I went wrong with my fantasy story, probably 'cause the last chapter was too tame, ROFL, but it sets up for the whopper I'm working on, LOL.

Figures

Guess I'll try that when I've got some spare time. THANKS!

Your essay on women and non-con was interesting, and I gave it a positive comment, both on the comments page and on my thread on SF BB "Embarras de Richesse." And I did that even though I do not agree with some of your conclusions, because the essay does provoke thought.
